You wake up at two in the morning, feeling hot. Even after kicking the covers off, your heart is still pounding and you feel like you’re sleeping in someone’s campfire. A check of your temperature confirms how you feel--you have a fever.
Fever is the body’s way of fighting infection. When your temperature goes up, it allows germ-fighting microbes to multiply, helping your body fight the invader. Whether a fever is high or not doesn’t indicate the seriousness of an illness; low temperatures can develop with a serious illness while a less-serious infection can cause you or your child to develop a high fever.
If you are so hot you can’t rest comfortably, take acetaminophen or ibuprofen at the recommended dosage. Give your child the same medications depending on his weight. Never give a child with a viral illness aspirin--he can develop Reye’s syndrome, which can cause permanent disability. To learn more about fever, read our Bright Hub guides.
