In biology, evolution is about change over time - any change in the form or behavior of a group of organisms from one generation to the next. Evolution is a fact; the fact that this change happens is easily observable and well-documented on the shorter timescales, and readily inferrable from fossil and molecular evidence on the longer timescales. Evolutionary theory is about how and why changes occur, and includes concepts like adaptation and natural selection, speciation and extinction.
Evolution is often also a political issue, where it is mistaken for a religion and compared to creationism (which is often mistaken for a science). The word "evolution" has also been applied to a variety of cultural, historical, social, technological, and other non-biology phenomena, such as computers, medical advances, and non-living parts of the universe. Learn more about the evolution of all kinds of things in the articles below - biological and otherwise.
