The old forms of encryption were largely mechanical based. Even the German Enigma machine, as sophisticated as it was, still used mechanical and electrical operations to encrypt messages. Today however, encryption is largely software based with mathematical algorithms acting as the foundation.
There are 64 bit and 128 bit programs that can encrypt a message. These make online transactions safe. Banking, personal email, specialized data information can be safely transmitted over the LAN lines or over the Internet. The Bright Hub guide to encryption software provides users with articles describing the different forms of software that offers security to information, and also a background to the algorithms that create the software.
