DOS, short for Disk Operating System, was a popular operating system available for x86 based PC's in the early eighties and nineties. It was also used in the Windows 95, 98 and ME operating systems. DOS was largely driven from the command line, and could be used to run only a single program at a time. There were many variants including MS-DOS, PC-DOS, and DOS lives on today with the FreeDOS project.
DOS is not used a great deal any more, but emulators like DOSBox can be used to run DOS applications under modern operating systems. Old DOS games are quite often run under such emulators.
