The Complete Guide to the Default Gateway

Network LogoIP based networks use the notion of a broadcast domain to define those local devices that can be directly communicated with. Typically devices connected to the same switch or router share the same broadcast domain. In order to communicate with devices outside of the local broadcast domain, say to connect to the internet, a PC or other networked device needs to first direct its traffic to a default gateway. The default gateway will then forward the traffic on to an external network, and direct incoming network traffic back into the local network.
