About Data Transfer Rates

Moving data among the different computer components has been the bottleneck in any computer operation. No matter how fast the processor works, no matter how fast memory is able to move data in its chip, once the data moves from one component to another there will be a slowdown. This is the data transfer rate. All components in a computer have their own transfer rate; the transfer rates are not identical because the components are not identical. There is a transfer rate from memory to the CPU, and a different one from the hard drive to memory. There are different rates for different components.

The Brighthub guide to data transfer rates provides articles and guidance information about what those rates are and how to measure them.
