Food allergies are a sensitivity to certain foods that may include tingling, swelling, hives, breathing issues, and stomach illness. These allergies may be expressed mildly to severely in each individual, and can be deadly. They are caused by the body's immune system mistaking particular food proteins as harmful, causing an allergic reaction, and may be tested for and treated with the help of a doctor, although they cannot be eliminated. Allergies are different from food intolerance, in that intolerance usually only affects digestion.
