Computer generated images take a variety of forms, playing a part in movies, animation, video games, and television commercials. CGI is often associated with 3D images, though computer generated images can be developed in 2D as well.

The common gateway interface is the standard by which web servers generate and display web pages. The interface uses applications known as CGI scripts to process data, doing so in a method appropriate to the application or web browser that is requesting it. A variety of web-based programs can be created using CGI, allowing websites or other data to be made on an as-needed basis.
