Carbon Dioxide: from Necessity for Life to Greenhouse Gas

Carbon Dioxide - Public Domain by Benji9072Carbon Dioxide, chemical formula CO2, constitutes a mere four one-hundredths of one percent of earth’s atmosphere, yet it is both vital to life, and at the same time life threatening. A gas of respiration, plants depend upon carbon dioxide to carry on photosynthesis. Through this process oxygen is given off enabling our survival.

Carbon dioxide was once used as a refrigerant and now Carbon dioxide-containing baking soda now helps freshen our refrigerators and cupboards. On the other hand, carbon dioxide is the second leading greenhouse gas. Levels on the rise in this industrial age, it has become a contributor to global warming—and global warming threatens our very existence.
