The human brain is made of many types of brain cells: neurons and glial cells. The University of Washington's Neuroscience for Kids page notes that the brain has 100 billion neurons, or nerve cells, and 10 to 50 times that number of glial cells. Sensory neurons carry sensory information from the different parts of the body to the central nervous system, while the motor neurons carry motor information from the central nervous system to the muscles. Several types of glial cells exist, such as astrocytes, oligodendroglia, microglial, Schwann cells and satellite cells. Here at Bright Hub, you can find articles on the different types of brain cells and the functions that they serve.
