Guide to Bisphenol A and Its Manufactured Products

NIH Polycarbonate Erlenmeyer FlasksAn organic compound containing two phenol rings attached to the central carbon of a propane molecule, bisphenol A (abbreviated BPA) is an essential component used in the manufacture of polycarbonate—a very clear, tough plastic. Improper handling of polycarbonate plastic can result in the release of very tiny quantities of bisphenol A. BPA is known to possess estrogen hormonal qualities that can interfere with early child development. Fetuses may be exposed through expectant mothers. Some baby bottles (and other food and beverage containers) are made of polycarbonate. BPA can affect adults, especially through endocrine disruption.
