Audio Video Interleave, or AVI, files contain audio and video data, which allows movies and other multimedia content to be played on a PC. AVI files can be played by most popular media players including Windows Media Player, VLC, Winamp and more. The AVI standard was created by Microsoft, but non-Microsoft operating systems like MacOS and Linux can play AVI files as well.
Although the term AVI refers to a specific standard, files created using other multimedia formats, like Divx, sometimes share the AVI file extension.
This guide shows you how to play AVI files, how to convert videos to and from the AVI format, and how to play AVI files on a standard DVD player.
