The Associated Press has, as its mission, the responsibility of bringing news to people around the world. In its Statement of News Values and Principles, the AP writes that it will not introduce inaccurate information into its news stories. In addition, the AP looks down on carelessness in journalism, inaccuracies, distortions of fact and bias in reporting. Its reporters refuse to pay for interviews and avoid behaviors that create conflicts of interest.
Before the AP, the News Cooperative, consisting of four newspapers, began. In 1846, The Journal of Commerce, The New York Herald, The Courier and Enquirer and The Express joined forces to deliver news of the Mexican War via Pony Express.
