What could be worse than rainfall that eats into or corrodes whatever it strikes? Sounds like somethink from a horror movie, but when this happens in nature it's known as acid rain. This phenomenon is caused by sulfur and nitrogen containing gases in the air that form sulfuric acid and nitric acid in combination with the water in rainfall.
Acid rain starts out as air pollution, but causes water pollution and damage to plants and animals as well. Sulfur and nitrogen gases may get into the air from natural sources, but a major cause of acid rain is the burning of sulfur containing coal, resulting in emission of sulfur dioxide in the smokestack exhaust. Learn more about the acid rain cycle and acid rain effects through the Bright Hub articles you can find using this guide.
