Having a list of all endangered species in your state can help you get involved in conservation efforts. Read on the learn why species become endangered and how to learn about endangered species in your state.
Why do Species Become Endangered?
There are many circumstances that cause a species to become endangered; most having to do with changes in the environment. The quicker these changes occur, the less time species have to adapt. This can make survival difficult or nearly impossible for some species.
Another issue that causes endangered species is introducing non-native species into an environment. This can occur both intentionally and unintentionally. However, either way this poses serious consequences for the native species. This is especially true if the new species is preying on the native or eating their food; changing the makeup of food chains and eco-systems.
Other causes of endangerment include disease and pollution in the animals’ natural environment.
The Endangered Species Act
The congress passed the Endangered Species Preservation Act in 1966. This act authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to create a list of endangered species, and allocate funds for purchasing habitat for those species.
Although this act has been important in protecting endangered species, greater conservation efforts are needed to preserve species on the brink of extinction (and those who are approaching endangerment).
