Green tourism has been around for years, drawing eco-savvy tourists to travel around the world to experience cool and unique ecosystems. Rarely was green tourism linked with urban American hotels – until now.

Affordable and Eco-friendly Hotels

In the recent years, you may have noticed that major hotel chains have made moderate efforts to implement eco-friendly practices by asking guests to reuse towels and linens. Until now, I was always skeptical that these requests were more driven by profit margins and the bottom line rather than true environmentalism. But now, some hotels are taking these sustainable practices to the next level in effort to save the planet while providing a healthier environment for both staff and guests.

Green tourism has been around for years, drawing eco-savvy tourists to travel around the world to experience cool and unique ecosystems. Rarely was green tourism linked with urban American hotels – until now. Hotels all around the country are banding together to go the next step in terms of sustainability.

This new class of eco-friendly hotels includes familiar and affordable names such as Comfort Suites and Hampton Inn. How do you know if a hotel is green? Check out this site for a list of green hotels. And if you can’t find one near your destination, chances a green hotel will be there before you know it.

So what exactly are some of the sustainable practices of green hotels? They include many of the traditional money and planet saving strategies that we use at home – including fluorescent light bulbs, low-flow showerheads and organic linens. However, in order to be considered among the eco-consciously elite, many hotels are seeking LEEDS certification. (LEEDS is an acronym that stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). In order to secure this prized certification, a building must meet certain physical and operational standards. From energy efficiency and water treatment to raw materials and cleaning practices, the hotel must strive to meet the highest environmental standards in virtually all aspects of its day-to-day operations.

So if you’re looking to green your next business trip or family vacation, take a few minutes to research eco-friendly hotels in your destination.
