Your neigbor's chickens might have fleas, but there really isn't anything you can do about that. What you can do is treat your dog and house. Start by giving your dog a bath to drown the fleas, using regular human shampoo. Then comb your dog, using a flea comb. You can buy a flea comb from the pet store. The fleas get caught in the teeth of the comb. Have a cup of water handy, to dip the flea comb into and drown the fleas.

To treat your house, assuming you have carpet, sprinke your carpet with borax or baking soda (both available at the grocery store). Borax is sold by the laundry detergents and is often called washing soda. Baking soda and borax dehydrate and kill the fleas. Let the borax or baking soda sit on your carpet for 10 minutes. Keep your dog and small kids away from the carpet during that time. While baking soda and borax are safe to be around, it is not safe to inhale a lot of it, like a dog or small child might. After 10 minutes, vacuum up the baking soda or borax.

You can treat your couches with the baking soda or borax, using the same methods used to treat your carpet.

You can also make the lemon flea spray, using the directions in this article. The citris kills the fleas. Spray your dog's fur once a day, avoiding his/her face and genitals, until the fleas are gone.

Comb your dog with the flea comb everyday, use the lemon spray everyday and retreat your carpet once a week, until the flea problem is gone. It takes a lot of vigilance on your part, but if you do this, you will get rid of the fleas.

Once you have the fleas under control, comb your dog with the flea comb at least once a week, so that you can catch a flea problem at the beginning before it gets out of hand and is easier to treat.

Hi Dorcas,

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with fleas. Do you have farm animals? If so, you will probably need to check them for fleas as well as your indoor pets.

The methods listed in this article will work for farm animals as well as indoor pets. Unfortunately, natural flea control takes a little bit of work and vigilance, but the alternative is harmful pesticides that can cause cancer and neurological problems.

If you do have farm animals, let me know what kind and I can give you customized flea control advice.

If treating your pets and home is too difficult for you, maybe you can enlist the help of a friend or family member.

Good luck!
