Alfalfa has several health benefits for humans and it's effective for pets, too. Alfalfa can provide protein as well as essential vitamins and minerals to your pet. Should you be feeding your pet alfalfa supplements?

Alfalfa is a herb that offers nutritional benefits for humans and pets alike. Alfalfa provides the following nutrients: protein, vitamins (A, C, E and K) and minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium and iron). This herb has been used for more than 1,500 years. The Chinese commonly used it to solve stomach issues such as loss of appetite. Because this herb has so many healing properties, it can be an effective supplement for your pet.

Forms of Alfalfa

Growing your own alfalfa from certified organic seeds is an easy way to introduce it to your animal. Whenever your pet needs a snack, he/she can stop by the alfalfa and take a few nibbles. It might be best to grow the alfalfa from seeds, because there is potential for the leaves to be contaminated with salmonella.

You can also incorporate alfalfa supplements into your pet's food and diet regime. Alfalfa promotes liver health, detoxifies, reduces cholesterol and blood sugar, boosts energy, relieves arthritis pain and enhances the immune system with its antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant properties.

Some animals regularly consume alfalfa hay, such as rabbits and dairy goats. Since alfalfa hay is high in protein and calcium, pet owners with bunnies are urged to feed them this while they're young. However, the alfalfa hay intake should be reduced as the bunny matures, because it should be transitioned to grass hay.

Monitor Your Pet's Alfalfa Feeding

Ask your veterinarian before feeding your pet alfalfa whether in plant, supplement or hay form. For some animals, it's best to feed alfalfa to them while they're young or if your pet will be providing milk. Depending on your pet's situation, it might not require this extra protein, vitamins or minerals, or the alfalfa might simply be beneficial as a once in a while snack.

If your pet vomits after eating the alfalfa, it's best to limit his/her intake. Instead of leaving the alfalfa available, introduce it to your pet for limited amounts of time.
