Types and Benefits of Earth Dwellings

It seems that as far back as prehistoric days, even cave dwellers had it right regarding earth dwellings. Today, earth dwellings, partial earth sheltered homes and underground homes are becoming more popular.

There a several types of earth dwellings, bermed, in-hill and underground just to name a few. In some parts of the country, bermed homes are quite noticeable. An earth bermed home has dirt piled against exterior walls that slope away from the home. The berm of dirt controls the heating and cooling of the home more efficiently, which reduces energy consumption. A home stays cooler naturally in the summer and is well insulated to prevent heat escaping in the winter.

Underground homes are homes built directly into the ground below ground level. Most underground homes will have an outdoor atrium to provide sunlight and ventilation. Underground homes are ideal in maintaining an even temperature year-round.

Much like the bermed homes, in-hill construction is set into a slop or hillside but will only have one wall exposed, which is the one facing out from the hill. Typically, the outer wall will face south for optimum heating and cooling conditions.

Of course, the conserving of energy is the best benefit but other benefits include the ability to build or remodel your home in a unique way. For example, in underground or in-hill construction, if the soil around the home is rocky, incorporate the rock into a room of the home. Consider a rock wall in the bathroom that is sealed to keep moisture out. Continue the rock theme with a natural rock bathtub with flat rocks jutting out randomly to hold soap or shampoo.

A modern method to earth shelters is the building of space between the home and the soil. This provides insulation, waterproofing and collection of water runoff. Any earth dwelling will require drainpipes and water interceptors to keep the home from flooding, especially the types with courtyards.

It would actually be fun to live in earth dwellings, as it would bring back memories of childhood days of escaping the heat while playing in cool caves or small shelters. Consider your next home or remodel to include earth dwelling ideas.
