Solar Made Jewelry from Sundrops

waterCordNecklaceSundrops Jewelry has created a way to harness solar power into making delicate teardrop shaped baubles. The company was founded by four Alaskan natives who relocated to Indiana. The inventive group of friends includes a geologist, a paleontologist, a software designer and an environmental activist came up with the idea of creating jewelry that is both solar and human powered. The overall environmental goal is to provide creative and beautifuleco-friendly jewelry by showing people the power of the Sun with wearable pieces of art.

The Sundrops, themselves are scrap pieces of various colored and non-colored glasses that are held under a Fresnel lens. The lens, which is thirty-one inches by forty-one inches focuses the power of the Sun in order to reach a burning point of three-thousand degrees Fahrenheit. The high temperature obtained in their creative process can not only melt the glass into their signaturesundrop shape but can also melt rock and metal materials. Co-founder and artist, Bretwood Higman first developed the solar glass melting method while growing up in Alaska.

The Sundrop line currently consists of simple earrings, double dangled earrings, double chime earrings, pendant necklace and the three-sundrop necklace, as well as wine glass charms and belly rings. The most popular item as listed through their main website, is that of the simple earrings. The simple earrings feature asundrop for each ear lobe hung by a silver french and pierced ear hook. Under the pendant jewelry offering, is the three-sundrop necklace which features three glass sundrops in a swirl pattern of silver.

Currently being sold in over ten states at various locations, there are two online ways to purchase some sun made baubles for yoruself. The first online store is at The Sundrop Jewelry Store, while the second is online at the non-profit The Hunger Site.
