Fly Control

Horse Fly MaskBiting flies are the nuisance of every horse owner. When the summer months come around and the flies start biting, horse owners get desperate. It is tempting to use a chemical pesticide spray when flies attack, but the harm the pesticides can cause may make you want to step back and rethink your decision. Pesticides are harmful. We already know that. The skin on horses are often raw with open wounds from fly bites. Most chemical pesticide sprays warn against using the sprays on open wounds. Spraying the pesticides on open wounds allow the pesticides to directly enter the bloodstream. In addition, horses lick and bite the irritated fly bitten areas, ingesting the pesticides as they do. A natural approach is safer for your horse, safer for you and safer for the environment.

Fly control is not easy. The best approach uses multiple methods.

1) Keep horse area clean. Clean out manure daily. Flies bread in manure. Keep manure awaiting disposal covered so that flies cannot breed in it.

2) Put mesh fly masks and mesh leg wraps on horses that are being bothered by flies. Make sure to take the masks and leg wraps off at night in order to give the horse and their skin a rest. Flies do not bother the horses at night.

3) Use fly predators to control fly populations. Spalding Labs sells fly predators that kill the fly larvae before they hatch.

4) Apply a natural fly spray on horses daily. Sometimes the sprays need to be applied more than once a day. Purchase a natural fly spray that is pesticide free. Look for products that do not contain ingredients that might sting when applied on raw skin. EQyss Marigold Fly Spray is a great natural product that does not irritate sensitive skin. The spray also works for mosquitos.
