Holidays and vacations can be stressful events for any environmentally conscious person, but with a little planning you can easily take your eco-friendly attitude on the road.
Stay Close to Home
The first way to take an environmentally friendly holiday is to stay relatively close to home. Long distance travel, after all, and especially air travel, can wrack up the carbon emissions extremely quickly and ruin an otherwise pristine carbon footprint.
The good news, however, is that most of us never explore many of the amazing places that are all around us. Parks, national monuments, resorts, and a whole host of other attractions are almost never that far away. Take a look and see where the tourists who are coming to your part of the world are going.
Eco-Friendly Travel
Another option is to travel in an eco-friendly manner. Trains, for example, go to many far off places and are a relatively environmentally responsible way to travel.
Another option is to make the travel the vacation. If you're feeling particularly adventurous and you don't have young children to worry about, a bike tour or a long distance hike can be excellent ways of seeing all kinds of nature that you would not otherwise see.
There are many different hiking trails listed over at wikipedia, and any picturesque back country road will make for an excellent bike ride.
Eco-Resorts
If you can stomach the long distance travel, you might also consider going somewhere that is environmentally sustainable in its practices. There are many eco-resorts which operate in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem, rather than carving a chunk out of it. Getting to such a place might wrack up your carbon emissions, but once there, you will be in an eco-friendly environment and you will get to experience exotic nature closely and personally.
Carbon Offsetting
Finally, if you have no say in where you go or you've got your eye on a particular vacation that, while desirable, has nothing eco-friendly about it, but are feeling morally torn about the environmental damage that you are incurring, there is always carbon offsetting to help right your environmental karma.
Carbon offsetting is, basically, paying someone else to be extra environmentally friendly for you, so that in the end, all is right with the universe. Carbon offsetting is a somewhat controversial practice for a variety of reasons, but many people, including Al Gore, are ardent supporters of the practice.
