Recycle Styrofoam: Make Your Own Glue

Instead of making craft projects with your left over Styrofoam, you can melt it down and make your own super glue at home. Learn about the process here.

Recycle Styrofoam: Make Your Own Glue

In the last article on Styrofoam (polystyrene), we looked at various ways in which people were recycling the polystyrene at home. Here we are going to go over a process in which you can turn your polystyrene into a super glue at home through a discovery that comes from a Japanese researcher at Sony.

Tsutomu Noguchi of the Sony Research Center found that the oil from orange peels would dissolve polystyrene. By using a product called Limoene, that contains .5% of the orange peel oil Noguchi found that the polystyrene would break down into a liquid form that created a very strong glue and can be used to create styrene pellets that go back into the production of more polystyrene. Currently, the Sony Corporation is the only major company to mass recycle polystyrene in this way through a full system that they call The Orange Network System. You can learn more about this process at: www.Sony.net

In order to make a polystyrene or styrofoam glue at home you will need some items to get the job done properly. So, first gather the following:

  • Two or Three Styrofoam (polystyrene) food containers
  • Limonene/Orange Oil *can be purchased at Citrus Depot
  • Large Metal Pot
  • Clean Jar or Jars with lids

Once you have your items together, the first thing you'll want to do is get set up in a well ventilated area or go outside. The Limonene has a powerful orange scent and the polystyrene can be odorous while breaking down.

  • Tear up or cut your polystyrene into small pieces
  • Place your polystyrene into the metal pot
  • Start off with pouring 4oz of Limonene onto the polystyrene

The polystyrene will then break down into a thin liquid form. Take the resulting liquid, which will amount to about 9oz and pour into a jar. Label it well as "Glue" before you put it away, so you and your household will know what it is later.

Chose to use your glue wisely, as it can also act as a type of sealant. Once you use it, just like some of the better super glues it is there to stay and is very hard to get off.

Response for Onma
According to BASF, a company that makes Acronal it is "Designed specifically for coating PVC and polyester films used for graphics, such as decorative signage, and for coating wide-format digitally printed image films, Acronal A 240’s compatibility with plasticizers allows excellent performance on PVC substrates."

Acronal is a coating substance but not one that can make a productive glue.

how to nake glue from acronal
dear sir/madam,
i have 2 tons of acronal, white colour like milk. a friend told me that it could be used as glue for wood and paper. after trials by polishing on pvc, the white colour is changed to clear and there is a layer of glue on it but not so hard or sticky. a tryal on wood also not so sticky. please help me how to make it to become super power glue, very good for wood and paper.
my best regards

Response for New Questions
The Limonene/Orange Oil starts to melt down the Styrofoam the moment it makes contact. It is not an instant process and will take a few minuets for it to complete melt down.

You can get the Limonene/Orange Oil from Citrus Deopt. The link and information is provided above.

How much time does it take?
Dear Laura, do you know how much time does it take to get done? Is it instantly or have to wait sometime.

hye...
i want make this styrofoam glue for my final project..
i want to know how long time polystrene take to break down..
and i want to know how u get the orange oil..
bobbyman Mar 25, 2010 10:05 AM
what is in it
whats in the orange oil that makes the polysterine break down into a thin liquid form?

Only works with the right oil
Thank you both John Horn and -mark for your comments and I appreciate them.

John Horn: The formula does not work using water, you have to use the Limonene/Orange Oil in order for the Styrofoam to melt down. To get super glue off of you it depends on what kind of super glue you are using. If you are trying to get the glue made from the Styrofoam off use the Limonene/Orange Oil.

-mark: The formula works when using the Limonene/Orange Oil on the Styrofoam. There are many areas on the web that show people having success when making and using this type of glue. A regular Google search result will show 218,000 confirmed links on making glue from Styrofoam.

Tried it. Doesn't Work. Please Remove This
BOGUS. Can't find any infomation confirming this and we tried it with no results.

hiitgy, that's a good point. I'll have to try that next time and skip the pot.

Have Good Ventilation
Yes, it is very important that when you make this glue that you do have good ventilation or you take the project outside.

Tricia, there really is no substitute for using the orange oil. It's the natural chemicals in the oil that affect the Styrofoam they way that it does in order to break it down.

Jkennedy312, you don't cook the Styrofoam. The metal pot is just used to hold the Styrofoam while the orange oil breaks it down. There is no cooking involved.

DANGEROUS
DO NOT INHALE POLYSTERENE SMOKE! TOXIC!

I NEED THIS SO BADLY
what can i substitute to orange oil???..
i really can't find one in our place...
what other substance can melt the styrofoam..i need it badly..its for my research..pls reply..

Styrofoam to super glue
I'm wondering if breathing in the fumes from cooking the styrofoam and citrus could be harmful? Someone this chemistry experiment doesn't sound like something I'd do in my kitchen. Good ventilation would be important.

process improvement
why not just put the liquid and styrofoam pieces into the jar, and avoid messing up the pot?
