Christmas is the time of year to show how much you adore your loved ones, so why not add your pets to the list? It's easy to pick out budget pet toys when there are so many eco-friendly playthings, treats and clothing available. So reduce your pet's carbon paw print with love this holiday.

Shopping for Your Pet

It’s one thing to shop for your spouse, friends and family, but it’s quite another to shop for the number one in your life, your pet. Pets love unconditionally and they always seem to know when you could use a cuddle or kiss. Shopping for your pet is easier, because there are so many eco-friendly toys, clothing, treats and other accessories to choose from. Plus, it’s a given that your pet will love anything you buy them for Christmas.

Before shopping for your pet, make a list of some things that your pet needs. This will prevent you from having to drive back out to the store. So assess your pet’s area to see what might be on their Christmas list this year.

Eco-friendly Pet Gifts

A bulldog tuckered out from Christmas festivities.Pets can always use toys that get them up and moving. Some companies have created sturdy dog toys made from 100% recyclable materials. A common material used to make these toys is recycled soda pop bottles. It’s also important to research the manufacturer and find out if you can send the toy back for recycling after it’s served its chewing purpose. Also keep in mind your pet’s need for exercise and choose toys that you can hide treats in or toys that are durable for use outside.

Whether you have a cat or dog, they can always use a comfortable bed to snuggle up in, especially during the winter. Look for pet beds that are made from post-consumer material and make sure that the bed can be washed. If you have a puppy in training, you don’t want to have to throw out the bed because of one accident.

In the case that you are having your family over for Christmas dinner, you might want to treat your pet to an early present. Warm sweaters made from reclaimed cotton can help your pet look stylish and presentable for guests. Also, an aromatherapy mist of lavender can keep your pet's nerves calm during the festivities.

Every cat owner knows that felines go crazy for catnip, so purchase some fresh organic catnip as a treat. Or you can buy some organic herbs like cat grass for your pet to feast on. For dogs, consider vegan treats made from organic whole wheat flour, flax seeds, beets, etc. Stay clear of treats that have been made with genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Another way to please your pet this holiday season is to give them a relaxing spa treatment. Chamomile shampoo will get their coat clean and appeal to their senses. There is also paw butter, which is made from botanicals and helps protect their paws from the cold and ice. If your pet has skin issues like hot spots, invest in some natural products to alleviate the problem and allow the skin to heal.

The Perfect Pet Christmas

While pets enjoy the treats and toys, they care more about spending time with their owners. So take time to bond with them during the holiday by going outside and playing fetch with that new flying disc or sitting near the fire and combing their fur. Once you get a few eco-friendly pet toys, you will have green pets by the New Year.
