Learn about Environmentally Friendly Software Initiative (EFSI). Should software developers join EFSI?

How the Environmentally Friendly Software Initiative Helps

Many companies go green to help save energy and the environment. They do this to take responsibility in improving the environment, save money and gain social responsibility points with the public.

You've probably seen the blue logo with Energy Star on it. That's just one of the initiatives going on around the world that covers green computing.

In searching for green computer and software initiatives, you -- especially those living in the UK -- may have come across Environmentally Friendly Software Initiative (EFSI), an initiative working to promote green practices in the software development industry.

EFSI encourages software vendors to support the environment by promoting the following best practices:

  • Deliver software online through downloads and web-based applications, which avoid wasting CDs, DVDs and packaging.
  • Provide user manuals online to avoid wasting paper as not everyone bothers to read the manual.
  • Encourage online training to avoid use of cars, gasoline, airplane travel and other travel.
  • Push for an online sales process to duck use of cars and other vehicles.
  • Develop Environmentally Friendly Software Strategy (EFSS).

EFSI asks that software buyers look for the EFSI logo on the vendors' products and web site. This indicates the vendor has received accreditation from EFSI.

How to Get EFSI Accreditation

The following outline the process for receiving EFSI accreditation:

  1. Fill out the EFSI registration form.
  2. Complete the EFSI Accreditation Questionnaire, which comes in an email.
  3. Submit the questionnaire by email.
  4. Wait for EFIS to evaluate your application.
  5. Receive payment instructions.
  6. Make a payment.
  7. Appear in vendor-approved Directory.
  8. Display logo on your web site and other documents.

Little information is available about EFSI on the Web and the directory page shows it would make an announcement in 2006. It's About page has no information. For the time being, it may be best to look elsewhere. Expect more articles like this on other green organizations and initiatives.
