You're ready to buy a new computer; whether it's your first or an upgrade you might as well go green from the get-go. Here are some tips to help you.

Green computing is definitely about getting the most out of your computer in terms of energy saving and faster processing speeds. But aw well as minimizing expense, it's also about reducing environmental effects. If you you’re buying a new PC or laptop then the best thing to do is get green from the get-go and here’s how:

Purchasing Tips for a Greener Computer System

· Nowadays it's relatively easy to buy a computer that will adapt to your needs as they grow. A number of the newer green systems have modular hardware so if something breaks down or you need to expand your system, you can do so without replacing the whole computer. Importantly, most of the modular parts are recyclable.

· Another green and less expensive option is to buy refurbished parts. Many retailers offer refurbished computer systems at very reasonable prices, so you can save money and the environment.

· Don’t forget the packaging! Look for computers with minimal packaging that is recyclable. Another good choice is a system that has user manuals installed on the system, that way you reduce paper.

Green Powering up and Powering Down

· Remember Energy Star. This government-backed program is helping consumers and manufacturers to protect the environment through low energy consumption. Energy Star computers now have to meet EPA standards in all three operating modes; active, standby and asleep. Energy Star computers are also required to have a more efficient internal power supply than traditional computers.

· Always turn your power off when you’re not using your computer. If you are in the habit of forgetting then use a program such as Sleepy that you can set schedule for it to power your machine down or off when your computer is not in use.

· Enable all your system power management features on your computer so that you can minimize power use. This will enable your computer to go into low-power mode when it is idle.

· Don't use the screen-saver mode. Moving screen savers do not save energy.

· Be print-smart. Use recycled paper and ink cartridges. Check out GreenPrint; a free software program that will cut out all those unnecessary pages.

Stay Green at the End

· When you're done with your old computer, if it still works donate it. Charity organizations have a number of uses for usable computers.

· Reuse any components that you can – they may be worth keeping as spares for your next computer.

· Recycle it. If you are not planning to donate your used computer, consider recycling it in an environmentally responsible manner. Almost all of the elements in a PC can be recycled.
