Currently they are the most effiicent power plants in the world.

The fuel burnt in the gas turbine rotates the generator to produce Electricity. The hot gases exiting the Gas turbine pass through an HRSG to produce steam which in turn rotates the steam turbine. The steam turbine rotates the generator to produce electricty

The gas turbine functions as per the Brayton cycle and the steam turbine as per the Rankine cycle.

Combined Cycle Power Plants - Basic Diagram

Combined Cycle Power Plants are the most efficient power plants today. These power plants combines the gas turbine power plant and the steam turbine power plant, to get the best out of both.

This is an animated view of how the combined cycle power plant works.
