Have you been to a movie lately and was dumbfounded with the sound effects or been to a musical concert and said to yourself it was indeed a soul-satisfying one? The ultimate goal of a sound engineer along with the rest of the crew members is to come up with a masterpiece- be it on films, musical videos or an outdoor concert- that employs the mostly highly advanced equipment in order to make the sound as entertaining as possible. So, to be a sound engineer, what qualifications do you need to build up, and what are the typical jobs and compensation?

Required Skills and Capabilities for Sound Engineers

Basically, what a sound engineer needs to have if he desires to work in a recording studio or in an open or close door entertainment venues are:

1) Firstly, a sound engineer should definitely have a very good sense of hearing. This means that he or she knows how to distinguish between sounds – knows which one is flat or which one is out of tune and of course knows timing and rhythm as well.

2) Secondly, one should have a good sense of imagination and has the ability to interpret what a particular musical set-up a certain scene calls for – on top of the musical artist skills of interpretation in the case of an outdoor concert. The sound engineer should easily adapt to the needs of every situation he is confronted with, as his ultimate goal is to satisfy the needs of his audience.

3) Lastly, the sound engineer should be well trained or has experience in using, both in hands-on and in theory, in using all the equipment he or she has in his or her disposal in order to make a movie, musical video or a musical show very entertaining. It makes a great difference if the sound engineer is not only well-equipped but also knows well how to use his or her equipment, much more if all equipment are highly sophisticated one.

Common Tasks for Sound Engineers in a Recording Studio

Most of the common jobs of a sound engineer in a recording studio include:

1) Incorporate well enough music or sound effects in a multimedia track record like in a CD, DVD, film or into other various format. With this job, he or she should be well versed in current or highly advanced software applications. Due to the nature of the job, he should be flexible in terms of his time commitments and know how to adjust because the job is dependent on the availability of the music artists.

2) To break down the above job scope into specific ones, one sound engineer could be responsible for:

  • Planning the recording schedule by keeping in touch with the all the crew members and the music artist
  • Operate the recording equipment, do the mixing as well as sequencing to get the best over-all set-up of sound and effects
  • Doing manual tasks like assisting the music artist with the microphones, music stand, music sheets, earphones, etc.

On the other hand, a typical sound engineer working in entertainment venues relatively look similar with the ones in the recording studio except on key additional points that the job schedule and duration may not be that highly predictable.

How Much can a Sound Engineer Make?

A typical sound engineer compensation maybe difficult to figure-out as a lot of factors affect in coming-up with an hourly wage. If we were to speculate, to get close to a $10 hourly rate is quite debatable.

With the aid of free tutorials from the internet on how to make a successful home recording studio with all the advantages and disadvantages exposed- including reviews of highly competitive but cheap home recording studio equipment- home recording is taking a toll on outside recording, especially for those who are serious about their career in the music industry. This major factor greatly contributes to the instability of outside recording as a business and many recording studio closures are likely inevitable.
