The installation of the split air conditioners is the most important and crucial part. If it is done properly your air conditioner will give you optimum performance, but if it is not done properly you won't get the desired cooling effect and there may be frequent maintenance problems.

Introduction

By now we have seen the different parts of the split air conditioners, now let us the installation of these Acs. The installation of the split air conditioners is the most important and crucial part. If it is done properly your air conditioner will give you optimum performance, but if it is not done properly you won't get the desired cooling effect and there may be frequent maintenance problems of which the most prominent can be the gas or refrigerant leakage. The installation of the split air conditioner should be done by an expert air conditioning technician and the task should not be left to a novice person who is experimenting with your AC. It requires lots of practice to become an expert split AC installation and erection technician.

Various factors have to considered during the installation of any split air conditioner, here we are going to consider how to do the installation of wall mounted split air conditioner. In other articles we would consider installation of other types of split air conditioners also.

Location of Indoor and Outdoor Units

Location of the Indoor and the Outdoor Units

The first step in the installation of split AC is deciding the location of the indoor and the outdoor units, only then the next important steps of the installation can be initiated. Let us the see the factors to be considered when deciding the location of these unit (see the images below):

1) Indoor Unit:

Here are the important suggestions when deciding the location of indoor unit inside the room:

a) The indoor unit is located inside the room at the location from where the air can be distributed evenly throughout the room.

b) As far as possible the indoor should be installed above the bed so that the maximum cooling effect can be obtained. It should be located directly above the bed. If one has to avoid the direct flow of chilled air on the body, one can always change the direction of the louvers. The indoor unit can also be installed on wall towards your feet though it can be installed on other side walls also.

c) The wall mounted indoor unit should be located at the height of about 8 to 10 feet from the floor so that that most of the chilled air is used for cooling the room and not merely for cooling the hot roof.

d) The indoor unit should be accessible easily so that one can conveniently clean the filter every fortnight and the whole unit and also that one can manually change the position of the louvers easily.

e) If the indoor unit is installed above certain window, make sure that it is in symmetry with the window, else the unit will look shabby. The indoor unit is meant to add to the aesthetics of the room and not destroy it.

2) Outdoor Unit:

Here are some points to consider when deciding the location of the outdoor unit:

a) The outdoor unit should be located in the open space preferably on the terrace so that the air can flow freely over the compressor and the condenser. If the terrace is not available it can be kept on the awning above the wall or it can be hanged on the external wall supported by the angles.

b) The location of outdoor unit should be such that it is easily accessible for carrying out the maintenance works of the compressor, condenser, and other devices. The installation and gas charging also should be convenient.

c) There should not be any hindrances in front of the outdoor that would block the passage of fan air from passing to the open space. Any blockages will seriously affect the performance of the AC and can also lead to the burning of hermetically sealed compressor coil.

d) The surface on which the outdoor unit is to be installed should be rigid enough to avoid its vibration. The vibration of the outdoor unit will raise excessive noise and also lead to the breaking of the copper tubing and leakage of the refrigerant.

It is always advisable to keep the outdoor unit at the height above the indoor unit. If the outdoor unit is kept at level below the indoor, some of the compressor power is used in pumping the refrigerant against the gravity, thus reducing the overall performance of the compressor. Most of the outdoor units are quite silent so one does not have to worry about their noise. The internal parts of the outdoor unit are shielded against the rain and sun rays, so one can rest assured about their safety in different climatic conditions.

The refrigerant at very low temperature flows inside the tubing between indoor and the outdoor unit, and there is always some loss of refrigerant effect to the atmosphere from these tubing, hence the distance between the indoor and the outdoor unit should be kept as minimum as possible to reduce the loss of the cooling effect. The maximum distance between the indoor and the outdoor units can be about 15 meters.

Sir, how do I service 2 ton split Ac perfectly? And how can I know the level of gas in the refrigerant if it is low or not?
Sir,please tell me how to refill the gas.
And I do I detect faulty capacitors and compressor, can I use only water to clean the condenser and evaporator?
Thanks Sir.

For Brad
Hi Brad,

The vertical distance of 30 ft between the indoor and the outdoor unit is too much. I would not recommend even the horizontal distance of this magnitude. Your compressor would just not have the energy enough to push the refrigerant to such a height. Remember you are pumping and compressing refrigerant and not the water (water pumps can pumps water to such heights).

Better place outdoor unit higher. The maximum height difference that I would have permitted is 12 ft.

BASEMENT INSTALLATION FOR OUTDOOR UNIT/.
Sir,

The area I need to cool is about 500 sq. ft. in the second floor of an upper/lower duplex. I would like to install the "outdoor" unit in the basement of the building (also easy to tie into the electric panel there), and run the tubing up a chase on the outside of the chimney to the second floor area, where the indoor unit would be installed about 7 ft. from the floor in a cut out in the wall.

The length of the vertical run would be something less than 30 feet. I noted your advice that the out door unit should ideally be installed at the same or higher height as the indoor so as to not loose efficiency due to having to pump the coolant uphill.

1. Is my idea to install in basement totally a stupid idea?

2. How much condensation, if any, does the outdoor unit through off, and does it need to be in a place where it can drain?

THANK YOU!!

Dear Mr Haresh
recently my mechanic told me that multimeter is showing 5.1 to 5.5 ampere for window AC of 6 amperes which is much less due to clogging. So it needs gas refill. is it so as the AC is cooling fine.

Abolarin
You don't have to calculate the power consumption for window air conditioner. If you see any window ac, you can see its voltage and current rating, just multiply the two and you will get its power consumption.

vschalla and swarup
The outdoor unit does not really need the protection from sun and rain. Even the outdoor unit of my room ac is installed on the terrace in open sky unprotected from sun and rain. If you want, you can make the shade for the unit above it, this will surely help in increasing the performance for you AC and also its some life.

The temperature of the refrigerant leaving the condenser is usually above 60 degree Celsius and it gets cooled to atmospheric temperature when in contacts with the outdoor air. The lesser is the air temperature less will be the refrigerant temperature and more will be the cooling effect. However, one can't just reduce the outside air temperature, but the temperature in shade is somewhat less, which gives the advantage in cooling.

The compressor and the other electrical components inside the outdoor unit are well protected so they don't need much protection from rain.

Out door unit on Terrace
I am happy with the information But one doubt, Our out door unit is installed by servicing engineer to day on Terrace. If it is placed on Terrace it is exposed to Hot Sun and Heavy rains. Will it not get spoiled? What if rain water goes into it? Because there is no shelter for it on Terrace. Please .... pacify me.

Issues
Shailendra, there are types of louvers in the indoor unit: horizontal and vertical. The horizontal louvers are connected to the swing motors and they move automatically. The vertical louvers are manually operated by hand.

issues in installation of split AC
Dear Mr. Haresh,
You have shared extensive information regarding Split AC installation, but I have a couple of doubts

- Indoor unit louvers if required should be adjusted with hand...as you have said... But in that case they may lead to change in noise level pattern of the air. The turbulance may increse further and can cause inconvenience. Moreover all AC's these days come with swing option so using automatic swing would be better

- Placing of Outdoor unit above indoor.. as you said.. In that case care must be taken to provide a loop in between otherwise compressor oil will not be able to return properly to ODU unit. It is best in case both can be kept at similar level if the same is possible onsite.

Outdoor unit
Dear Rocky,

The size of the outdoor unit of the split unit is different from the window AC, so there is no company that can manufacture the unit you are looking for. Better pack the window AC slot with bricks or fit the window there and then install the outdoor unit outside the room. You can even install it along the sides of the external wall on the brackets.

5-star
Dear friends,
I have just purchased an 5-star 1 tonne Samsung AC. In their website and literatures it is seen that there are no diiferences in the specifications of the outer unit. It is common fir any star rating, but at the same time claims that it consumes less power. Is there any way to ascertain this. Or is it that I am taken for a ride with just gimmics in their ads. I have not so far fixed the system and is waiting for the mechanic in 2 days. I belong to Malappuram Dt in Kerala

Drain pipe
If that is the case you can keep it concealed, there should not be any problems. For additional safety you can use high quality of drain pipe. You can also use thick PVC pipe concealed inside the wall and connect the flexible drain pipe at its ends.

drain pipe
Dear Haresh,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

On the same subject.

What I meant was, the drain pipe would be concealed in the plastered wall but the open end of the pipe (discharge) would be exposed or connected to eg. perimeter drain.

Thanks.
Haresh Khemani Oct 31, 2009 7:12 AM
Drain pipe
Dear Zainin,

The drain pipe has to be left in the open space since lots of water keeps coming out of it.

By keeping it concealed, I assume you want to leave it inside the wall, which is not feasible.

ZAINI ABD RAHMAN Oct 30, 2009 2:35 AM
drain pipe
Hi Haresh,

This is very useful and thanks.

I am in process of installing few new split unit AC into my under construction house. I considering of installing the drain pipe within the brickwall (concealed) for asthetic reason. Someone told me that it would be quite risky as there would be possibility that the drain pipe may leak and causing dampness effect to the painted wall. Is it possible and what's the best way to avoid this problem.
Haresh Khemani Oct 9, 2009 1:36 AM
Multi split
The ordinary unit can be converted into multi split, but in that case you will be able to use only one indoor unit at a time since the capacity of the compressor and the condenser is limited.

In most of the multi split units there is is separate compressor and the condenser for each of the indoor unit. All the compressors and the condensers are enclosed in a single box.

In some new multi split units single large compressor is used to run a number of small indoor unit systems. In this case the speed of the compressor changes automatically as per the load i.e the number of indoor units running.
Haresh Khemani Oct 9, 2009 1:27 AM
Multi split
The ordinary unit cannot be used as the multi split unit. It is better to purchase a separate multi-split unit.
