Advantages of a Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler

Circulating Fluidized Bed combustion is competing with Pulverised Coal firing to give boiler and power plant operators a greater flexibility in burning a wide range of fuels. What is the specific advantage of this technology? What are its limitations ?

The Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) technology offers definitely certain advantages over the conventional Pulverized Coal (PC). As with any system there are limitations also. The key advantages and limitations are discussed in this article.

Fuel Flexibility

The most important advantage of the CFB is the flexibility of firing a wide range of coal from 9500 to 25000 kJ/kg. CFB’s can also burn a limitless number of other types of solid fuels, separately or mixed with coal. The limitations if any are only in the feeding and other mechanical equipment. The output capacity and steam parameters depend on the heating value of the fuel.

CFB boiler can use different types of solid fuels that include low quality coal, lignites, coal blends, bagasse in sugar plants, bark in pulp and paper mills, coal washery rejects in mines, petcoke and other bio mass products. Most of these fuels are seasonal, production or availability dependent. Mixing with coal or using coal when other fuels are not available gives an uninterrupted steam and energy supply.

Sulphur Dioxide removal.

Firing high Sulphur coal requires the use of a Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) plant to keep emissions within statutory limits. An FGD is a complicated plant that requires high capital investment and operational cost. In a CFB limestone addition in the furnace converts the SO2 to sulphates during the combustion and circulation which goes out with the ash. A CFB boiler costs less than a PC fired boiler with an FGD.

NOx Reduction

The combustion temperature in the furnace in a CFB boiler is considerably less than PC boilers resulting in lower NOx emissions. There is no additional requirement of separate NOx capturing devices which reduces capital investment.

Maintenance

Eliminating the pulverizer and pulverized coal piping reduces maintenance, related outages and equipment redundancy. A part of this saving is offset by higher maintenance due to erosion in pressure parts and furnace area, and maintenance of the refractory.

Auxiliary Power

Eliminating the pulveriser reduces power but is offset by increased power for higher quantity of primary air. Auxiliary power reduction by eliminating the FGD is a definite gain.

Limitations

Unit capacities with CFB technology are limited to 200 MW range. Higher capacities are in development.

Higher steam pressures and temperatures increase the power plant cycle efficiency. CFB technology has yet to achieve the same level of parameters in the new large power plants.

Presence of sulphur the performance of refractory also. It will react easily with Cement Based Castable and deteriorate the strength of the castable. If the percentage of sulphur is high, it is always advised to use Plastic refractory castable. In order to avoid sulphur attack with refractory lime dosage will be added. It is always advisable to blend the lime with coke before feeding.

The effects of sulphur is mainly acid formation and corrossion , especially at the lower temperature regions of flue gas path.

Higher temperatures can lead to slagging. In a CFBC Once slagging occurs this will block the bed and the total system.
In PC boilers certain amount of slagging can be tolerated as it can be removed without effecting the unit operation.

combustion temp of PC boilers
sir,
why we are maintaining temp limit between 800 - 850 deg in CFBC. can't we maintain this in PC boilers. why the combustion temp is high in PC boilers. kindly clarify.

The design of the loop seal is done after many considerations and experience of the boiler manufacturer. So any partition plat if provided has a specific function. If this was damaged , or missing this could alter the flow patterns at the bottom of the cyclone and lead due to undue erosion.

What will happen if there is no partition wall in the loop seal. Whether it will create any problem in the performance of boiler.

Very recently, we have faced problem in cyclone cone and down leg junction. The refractory was totally eroded at these location. While inspecting, we have noticed there was no partition wall in the loop seal. Since it was failed long back, the end user is operating boiler, which out partition wall in the loop seal. On account of the same, whether it will have any impact of gas path in the cyclone

There could be combustion taking place at the USeal area, or there is furnace gases bypassing through the seal area.

Co firing of coal and lignite can be done.
The maximum proportion of lignite that can be fired will depend on achieveing steam parameters.
During startup it may be required to fire only coal. Also of concern will be the feeding lignite separately or mixed in the yard.

Can coal and Lignite on a 50 - 50 basis be burnt effectively in a CFBC boiler

In a CFBC the ash separated in the cyclone gets recirculated back to the furnace. The cyclone is at a lower pressure than the furnace since this is connected to the ID Fan. The hot gas will directly short circuit to the cyclone from the furnace. To prevent this there is a sealing arrangement at the point where the ash returns to the furnace. Physical configuration of the ash flow chute and a special seal air system prevents this. This is the Loop seal system.

Dear Sir,
We doing refractory jobs for the CFBC BOILER such as Combustor, Cyclones, down comer & seal pot . But i wants to know the working principle of this boiler and the equipments. I Need individual equipment working procedure and schematic diagram of this Boiler.

The main problem in CFBC is erosion of the pressure parts due to the moving ash and bed material.
Over the years the design engineers have devoped various means like refractory covered surfaces in critical locations, special profiles and flow patterns. These have increased the availability of the boiler almost same as the pulverised fuel boilers.
