How does a Gas Turbine Power Plant Work? The Auxiliary Systems.

Gas Turbines are one of the most efficient equipment for converting fuel energy to mechanical energy. How does a Gas Turbine work? What are the auxiliary systems for the Gas Turbine? This article explains in simple terms the working of the Auxiliary Systems in the Gas Turbine Power Plant.

The three main sections of a Gas Turbine are the Compressor, Combustor and Turbine. The gas turbine power plant has to work continuously for long period of time without output and performance decline. Apart from the main sections there are other important Auxiliaries systems which are required for operating a Gas Turbine Power Plant on a long term basis.

Air Intake System

Air Intake System provides clean air into the compressor. During continuous operation the impurities and dust in the air deposits on the compressor blades. This reduces the efficiency and output of the plant . The Air Filter in the Air Intake system prevents this.

A blade cleaning system comprising of a high pressure pump provides on line cleaning facility for the compressor blades.

The flow of the large amount of air into the compressor creates high noise levels. A Silencer in the intake duct reduces the noise to acceptable levels.

Exhaust System

Exhaust system discharges the hot gases to a level which is safe for the people and the environment. The exhaust gas that leaves the turbine is around 550 °C. This includes an outlet stack high enough for the safe discharge of the gases.

Silencer in the outlet stack reduces the noise to acceptable levels.

In Combined Cycle power plants the exhaust system has a ‘diverter damper’ to change the flow of gases to the Heat Recovery Boilers instead of the outlet stack.

Starting System

Starting system provides the initial momentum for the Gas Turbine to reach the operating speed. This is similar to the starter motor of your car. The gas turbine in a power plant runs at 3000 RPM (for the 50 Hz grid - 3600 RPM for the 60 Hz grid). During starting the speed has to reach at least 60 % for the turbine to work on its on inertia. The simple method is to have a starter motor with a torque converter to bring the heavy mass of the turbine to the required speed. For large turbines this means a big capacity motor. The latest trend is to use the generator itself as the starter motor with suitable electrics. In situations where there is no other start up power available, like a ship or an off-shore platform or a remote location, a small diesel or gas engine is used.

Fuel System

The Fuel system prepares a clean fuel for burning in the combustor. Gas Turbines normally burn Natural gas but can also fire diesel or distillate fuels. Many Gas Turbines have dual firing capabilities.

A burner system and ignition system with the necessary safety interlocks are the most important items. A control valve regulates the amount of fuel burned . A filter prevents entry of any particles that may clog the burners. Natural gas directly from the wells is scrubbed and cleaned prior to admission into the turbine. External heaters heat the gas for better combustion.

For liquid fuels high pressure pumps pump fuel to the pressure required for fine atomisation of the fuel for burning.

These are the main Aiuxiliary systems in a Gas Turbine Power Plant. Many other systems and subsystems also form part of the complex system required for the operation of the Gas Turbine Power Plant.

RE: How does a Gas Turbine Power Plant Work? The Auxiliary Systems.
Natural gasoline has an octane rating of about 30 to 50, sufficient for the low-compression engines of the early 20th century. By 1930, improved engines and higher compression ratios required higher-octane, refined gasolines to produce power without knockingor detonation.

It is possible option and it is widely proven technology in India.
For your reference

A Power plant in Tamil Nadu with similar capacity and configuration as per requirement is operating

Company :OPG Power Plant, Probably this one using for captive purpose

A Gas engines with Heat Recovery unit possible option
Probably Siemens are manufactures for the capacity requirements

1. You should know the GCV of the fuel ~ 42000 kJ/kg
2. Calculate the heat rate HR= 3600/efficiency = 3600/0.55 =6545 kJ/kw.hr
3 Fuel consumed QF
=HR/GCV =6545/42000 = 0.156 kg/kw.hr
4. Total fuel
= MW x 1000 x QF = 50000 * 0.156
=7800 kg /hr

- low capacity gas turbines are available even upto 1 MW. Waste heat boilers can also be connected to the exhaust. It is only a matter of cost economics.
-In Coal producing countries the cheapest alternative is Col based steam power plants. But with tighter CO2 emisioin regulations this will change.
- basic equation is
kw=sqrt 3 x V x I x power factor.
Vx I is the kva
kw=kva x sqrt 3 x power factor

37.5 % efficiency is 3600/.375 = 9600 kJ/Kw.hr
For 47 MW is 47*1000 kw per hour which means
47000*9600 kj/hr of gas is required.
If the CV of gas is XXX kj/M^3 then
47000*9600 / XXX M^3 of gas is required per hour.

Gas Requirements
Hi,

how do I determine the amount of gas required to operate a gas tubine? Is it based on the output and efficiency? For example if I have a turbine of 47MW with 37.5% efficiency, do I covert the volume for 47MW into gas then add 62.5% on top of that? Thanks.
johnzactruba Sep 15, 2010 7:06 PM
reply anjum
The gas turbine and generator has big mass. The gas pressure alone will not be able to even rotate it.
You can calculate the output by knowing the efficiency ( around 35 % ) whicsh is 3600/.35 = 10286 kj/kwh. If you know the heating value of gas say 40000 kj/NM3 then gas qty is 10286/40000 = 0.257 NM3/kwh.

this happen after 1 year of operation, no high vibrations occur and yes it is the only incident
johnzactruba Aug 9, 2010 6:36 PM

Failure at the root is normally because of fatigue stress. The blade is subject is some kind of aerodynamic stress,
Could be a deficiency in the blade design, so that after a certain no. of hours the fatigue stress cracks occur leading to failure.
Is this only a single incident ? After how many hours of operation has this taken place ? was there any high vibration ?

ACC fans
Dear john,
today one of the ACC fans is break down, one of the blade is broke from the joints, the bolt is make a failure
this causes the blade to break from the root and fall down on the ground, what is the possibilites for failure like this? is it related to operational hours or maybe the bolt is tightened more than limited torque?

Generators run at 3000 rpm ( for 50 Hz) or 3600 rpm (for 60 Hz). Some Gas turbines especially aeroderivitives run at 6000 rpm .This is reduced to 3000 rpm by speed reducers. Hence it is called multi safts..

Dearting Factor
Thanks a lot for the reply
johnzactruba Mar 30, 2010 7:39 PM
reply barkat sandeep
Derating has two consider 2 factors.
1. Change in actual density from iso conditions. This takes care of altitude, RH % and abient temperature changes.
Power_act= Power_iso x density_iso / density_act
In practice there may be slight changes because of efficiency and automatic corrections . This can be got only if we refer to the manufacturers correction curves.
2. Account for Entry and exit losses.
Roughly it is 1.5% power output decrease and 0.5 % increase in Heat rate for 10 mbar increase in inlet pressure.
0.5 % power output decrease and 0.5 % increase in Heat rate for 10 mbar increase in exit pressure.
This also has to be correlated with manufacturers correction curves and is specific to different capacities and types.

Apart from the safety valves and rupture discs provided in the steam line , from the steam field to the turbine , there is one major device . This steam release valve , which lets out the steam to atmosphere in case sudden trip on the turbine side. This is a quick acting control valve. The special thing about this is the steam is released through a rock muffler to reduce the sound.
