How does a Gas Turbine Power Plant Work? – The Main Equipment.

Gas Turbines are one of the most efficient equipment for converting fuel energy to mechanical energy. How does a Gas Turbine work? What are auxiliary systems ? This article explains in simple terms the working of the main parts of the Gas Turbine.

Gas turbine functions in the same way as the Internal Combustion engine. It sucks in air from the atmosphere, compresses it. The fuel is injected and ignited. The gases expand doing work and finally exhausts outside. The only difference is instead of the reciprocating motion, gas turbine uses a rotary motion throughout.

This article details the three main sections of the Gas Turbine.

1. Compressor.

The compressor sucks in air form the atmosphere and compresses it to pressures in the range of 15 to 20 bar. The compressor consists of a number of rows of blades mounted on a shaft. This is something like a series of fans placed one after the other. The pressurized air from the first row is further pressurised in the second row and so on. Stationary vanes between each of the blade rows guide the air flow from one section to the next section. The shaft is connected and rotates along with the main gas turbine.

2. Combustor.

This is an annular chamber where the fuel burns and is similar to the furnace in a boiler. The air from the compressor is the Combustion air. Burners arranged circumferentially on the annular chamber control the fuel entry to the chamber. The hot gases in the range of 1400 to 1500 °C leave the chamber with high energy levels. The chamber and the subsequent sections are made of special alloys and designs that can withstand this high temperature.

3. Turbine

The turbine does the main work of energy conversion. The turbine portion also consists of rows of blades fixed to the shaft. Stationary guide vanes direct the gases to the next set of blades. The kinetic energy of the hot gases impacting on the blades rotates the blades and the shaft. The blades and vanes are made of special alloys and designs that can withstand the very high temperature gas. The exhaust gases then exit to exhaust system through the diffuser. The gas temperature leaving the Turbine is in the range of 500 to 550 °C.

The gas turbine shaft connects to the generator to produce electric power. This is similar to generators used in conventional thermal power plants.

Performance

More than Fifty percent of the energy converted is used by the compressor. Only around 35 % of the energy input is available for electric power generation in the generator. The rest of the energy is lost as heat of the exhaust gases to the atmosphere.

Three parameters that affect the performance of a of gas turbine are

  • The pressure of the air leaving the compressor.
  • The hot gas temperature leaving the Combustion chamber.
  • The gas temperature of the exhaust gases leaving the turbine.

The above is a simple description of the Gas Turbine. Actually it is a very sophisticated and complex equipment which over the years have become one of the most reliable mechanical equipment. Used in Combined Cycle mode gives us the most efficient power plant.

Gas turbines a require pressure in the range of 25 bar for the smaller size and 40 bar for the higher sizes.
if not avallable from the supplier at this pressure a compressor has to be used. Gas engine compressers are normally used .

Gas turbine blades are made of special alloy steel consisting of Titanium , Tantalum, Rhenium and tungsten. Apart for this they have special coatings,
internal cooling arrangements. The material structure of the blades are also very special. This allows the blades to work at high temperatures and limits thermal expansion and withstand high stresses.

The hot gases move with high velocity over the blades of the gas turbine to rotate it. This rotation is connected through the shaft to a generator to produce electricty.

BRAVO SIR,
sir am really impressed with your message here its really a good and educating one of which are very correct...am an industrial training student with a new power company here in Nigeria working towards generation of standby power supply n one of its major cities and i was privileged to enter inside the gas turbine because its still under construction and i saw this three main parts that u mentioned and their functions in the functioning of the turbine....sir am really impressed with your work here so i just thought it wise 2 applaud and commend your efforts,

what is the pressure required for turbine to operate ?
and is there any way that according to turbine capacity we have to design the compressor?

Why is it turbine has 3-4 buckets (rotors) sometimes. Somebody explained me for complete pressure drop....bt if the first rotor rotates with little pressure drop, why do we need a second rotor for more pressure drop...........If the shaft is connected to all the rotors.......so if first rotor rotates the shaft wld rotate.........so if pressure drop at first take fr eg is frm 5-2 its gonna rotate at 5000 rpm nw why we need 2nd rotor fr drop frm 2-0 which will only rotate the rotar at 3000 rpm!!

CNG, LNG or Natural gas the basic composition is the same containing mainly CH4 methane.
After combustion the Carbon part forms CO2 and the Hydrogen part forms Water vapour.
The percentage of Carbon in N gas is much less than in Coal. Hence the CO2 formed is less than in a coal fired power plant. This is how the N gas saves in greenhouse gas emissions.

CNG after utilisation
What is the composition of CNG (Natural Gas) after it is utilised in the process.
How does it effect the green house emission

reply vasu-sprint system
When the air gets compressed in the GT-Compressor, the air temperature will increase. This will reduce the mass of air swept into the GT whereby reducing the output and efficiency.
To overcome this some design use an intercooler where the air from the compressor is taken out and cooled and sent back to the GT.
In a SPRINT system the air is cooled by spraying a fine mist of water in the air compressor stages. This reducess the air temperature and gives higher output and efficiency.

reply vasu-importance of the exhaust gas temperatures
Gas temperature entering the gas turbine blades ( or leaving the combustor) is the most important parameter in determining the efficiency.
Higher the temperature higher the efficiency. High temperatures are limited only because of material limitations.
If you see the history of the GT , for the same size of turbine the ouput has increased many times, because material development allowed higher operating gas temperatures. Advanced cooling methods, blade coatings, blade and liner materials all have contributed to this increase.

reply - viral about generating power wihn increasing mechanical input.
Imagine the GT + generator running at constant speed. When the electrical load increases the speed of the GT will start reducing. This gives a signal to increase the fuel input thereby bringing the speed to the earlier value. This similar to the automible when you suddenly encounter a slope. To keep the speed you have to pump in more gas.

i m confused abt that after synchronising how power increasing with increasing gas flow to turbine at that time what happens in generator.
