Marine profession is a very attractive and charming career even for those who are not much aware of the job profile of a mariner. So just learn what mariners do in different roles that are assigned to them on board ships

Introduction

Movies about seas and oceans always fascinated me since childhood and I am sure it must be the same with many of you. You must have watched the gala parties in the movie Titanic which was the story of a cruise liner, but marine life is not solely about partying as is the popular misconception. This article is just meant to give a clear picture to you about the interesting but widely misunderstood field of marine job profile.

Marine Job Profiles

The Mariners

Firstly most of us confuse the term mariner or a marine with some sort of defense personnel who fights against the enemies. Actually this is just part of the whole picture and you can learn more about marines by clicking on this article. There are other people who are known as commercial mariners and broadly speaking they can be divided into two categories namely Marine Engineers and Navigating Officers.

Marine Engineers

As the name suggests, marine engineers mainly deal with the maintenance of various kinds of machineries found on board ships. There is a long list of such machineries and they include the main engine or the main propulsion plant, the auxiliary power generators, boilers, pumps, inert gas systems and so forth. Needless to say when a ship is built these machineries are fitted at that time in the ship building yard but since a ship is almost continuously on the move these machineries require constant preventive as well as breakdown maintenance in order to keep those machineries in proper operational condition. Of course major breakdowns might occur as well which might require external specialist help.

Navigating Officers

They are the white-collared mariners whose main job is to carry out duties relating to the loading discharging of cargo, navigating (driving) the vessel (ship) and other administrative jobs. While most of the engineers sweat out in the engine room (except probably the chief engineer sitting comfortably in the air conditioned engine control room) the navigating officers are like pilots of an airplane guiding and controlling where the ship is going.

Miscellaneous Crew

Apart from these two main categories of marine officers, there are other personnel on board which are like fitters, welders, oilmen, wipers, cook, stewards and so forth.

Note

I know the above is a very brief description of the marine job profiles but do not worry for we will also be undertaking more detailed study of each of these in separate articles as it is not possible to load a single article with all the information. Apart from that if any reader has got any questions regarding a marine career, they can feel free to contact me with their queries

How to get Indian CDC
Dear Sir,
Good Evening.

I have done 10th with 52% in year 2003. Recently I completed my G.P.Rating Course from Thailand in the end of September 2010. I have Thai CDC and not yet sailed. The Institute will be giving me the placement for 9 months On board Training in few months as I have given my passport for some changes.
I would appreciate if you can let me know how can I get the Indian CDC. Is there a course like GMDSS for which I am eligible or I have to do the G.P. Rating from India. I am 23 years old.

Thanks & Regards,
Arjun Salaria

Re - Muahmmed Uvise
If you want to go in deck side (i.e. become Captain ultimately) you can complete +2 if in India (or equivalent qualification whatever in your country if not from India), then you need to do pre-sea training and join ship as cade for about 36 months and give exam for Nautical Officer, in case you want to become Marine Engineer you can do diploma or proper bachelors of engg and then join shipping, you would better consult a local institute wherever you are located

help me 12 or diploma
sir u told to study 12 but should do polytechnic / diploma first
Ricky Feb 28, 2010 2:04 PM
Re - Muahmmed Uvise
Hi, its good that you have a goal and aspiration at this age. firstly you can proceed with +2 and after that you can either join deck side or do engg and join engine side as marine engineer, depends on your taste, interest etc. remember no job is better than other in the true sense of the word but only one which is to your liking and you feel satisfied, that will be enjoyment and not merely work

Hello Chetan,
i have completed my B tech mech and for the past 1and 1/2 year am working in Renault Nissan automobile. but am much interested to go for marine machines and technology. and am planning to do it in UK, but i dont have much idea that which university is good for these courses and with better placement. and also i want to know the future prospect of this course in this present scenario of recession. please do suggest me which one is preferrable marine engineering/technology or off shore technology.

Re: chetan j kamble Information abt sea career
Hi Chetan, Since you are diploma in Mech Engg there are certainly lot of options for you. Nowadays many institutes have programmes wherein even +2 guys can goto officer cadre. Details would have to be found from relevant depts/agencies. Some of these course can be bit expensive such as those collaborated to MCA, UK. I suggest you cotact a writer Mr Hiro Chandwani at this channel. He is senior faculty at Don Bosco Maritime Institute and ask him to help you out. You might need to register free at this website to contact him through his profile so that you can have one to one contact with him, hope all this helps, Thx
