Here we comprehensively discuss the various functions of IC 4017 pin outs. By assigning simple commands to its different pins, the IC may be wired up into innumerable different useful circuits. Let's learn more about the easy pin configurations of IC 4017 decade counter.

Introduction

We have already studied about the 8085 pin description and the 4060 chip in our discussions related to Integrated Circuit chips. We also learnt how to decouple a logic circuit. In this article we will talk about 4017 pin outs in detail.

The IC 4017 is a versatile IC of the CMOS family which has got wide range of applications. Internally it consists of a 10 stage decade counter/divider. When a clock pulse is applied to it externally, its outputs become logic 'hi' and 'lo' sequentially (one after the other). It has got numerous applications, for example in circuits where sequential switching are required and also in decorative ornamental lighting, where the lights are switched on and off sequentially giving it a 'running' effect.

Pin Configurations of IC 4017

As can be from the diagram above, the IC 4017 is a 16 pin dual in line package IC. Pin 1 can be identified from a small depressed circle at the extreme left corner of the IC, or simply one can always remember, the printed side of the IC facing towards you, the pin beginning from the left side of the semi circle notch of every IC is pin 1.

Pin configurations of this IC are as follows:

  • Pin 1 to pin 7 and pins 8, 9, 10 are all the outputs of the IC.
  • Pin 16 is for the positive supply and pin 8 is ground.
  • Pin 15 is the reset point of the IC. A logic '0' to this pin (or by connecting it to the ground), gives a green signal to the IC, so that it can function. A logic '1' or a positive supply here will bring its proceedings to a stand still and will reset it. At this position pin 3 of the IC4017 stays at logic '1' where as all other outputs are logic 'lo'.
  • Pin 14 is the clock input of the IC 4017. An external clock signal to this point will make a logic '1' to proceed sequentially, beginning from pin 3 and ending at pin 11.
  • The cycle is repeated as long as the clock persists at pin 14. The period of time each output stays logic '1' will depend on the time period of the positive peaks of the clock signal. With the rising edge of every clock pulse, the 'logic 1' will shift from one output to the other serially.
  • Pin 13 is the clock enable point. A logic '1' to this pin will stop the IC 4017 from proceeding and its output will freeze at that instant at the particular output. Even if the clock signal at pin 14 is ON, the output cant shift as long as pin 13 is held at logic'1', therefore this point should be grounded. On the contrary if pin 14 is held at logic'1' and clock signal is applied at pin 1, every falling edge of the pulse will make the outputs to change state sequentially.

Hi Maria
Is it required to be constructed by soldering the parts over a PCB or just procuring the gadgets and wiring them up?
Of course the latter will be easier because assembling over a PCB can be almost impossible unless you are an expert with the subject.

Hi Charles
Did you connect the IC 4093 pin-outs correctly? Remember the inputs of each gate are shorted with each other as shown in the diagram.

Do the following modifications that will prove whether the 4093 is working correctly or not:

Disconnect the pin #14 connection from the gate of 4093 and introduce a LED in between, the anode will go to the gate of 4093 and the cathode to pin14 of 4017.
ALSO CONNECT A 1K RESISTOR FROM PIN14 TO GROUND.
Now switch on the power, adjust the pot of that particular gate, if this LED oscillates means 4093 is OK, otherwise there's something wrong with your 4093 wiring or the IC itself.

Regards.

ic 4093
hi my friend...... I just power my ic4093 but now my LED stays off. I moved the pot back and forth without success. this is the IC I bought; cd4093 4093 cmos nand schmitt trigger. is this the correct one? In my strobe light proyect as well the 4093 does not work. the ic 4017 work perfectly, when I switch voltage to pin 14 it switches sequentially but if I power the 4093 my LED stays off. I got no idea why I'm not getting the switching signal. There is anyway to check the IC 4093 is good? so far I got two circuits with the same problem, My signal does not switch properly. I really appreciatte your valuable time. thank you.
Swagatam Dec 13, 2010 4:46 AM
Hi Charles
Obviously you've got power the IC 4093 by giving a (+) to its pin 14 and a (-) or ground to pin 7,

Without a supply voltage no IC can function.

I think this will immediately make your circuit work.

Regards.

ic 4093
hi my friend..... I tried to make a flasher by using the ic 4093 exactly like you show in the diagram but my LED stays solid on. why? do I have to supply power to pin14 and ground to pin 7? I used my tantalum capacitor connecting the negative lead to ground and the positive to my pot. please give me a hint.
Instead of using a 1k ohm resistor in series with the LED (on the positive line) I uased a 150 ohms is this an issue?
Swagatam Dec 12, 2010 8:22 AM
Hi Charles
Please check that the circuit is built exactly as shown in the diagram, pin #14 connection is also shown in the diagram itself.
Do not give manual pulses to pin #14 that may produce malfunction in the circuit.
Use either pin 1and 2 or pin 2 and 3 for the pot connection, in short include the center pin and any one of the outer pins.
1u tantalum is OK, but make sure that its connected the right way (check polarity), the negative sign goes to the ground and vice versa.
Regards.

strobe light
Hi buddy.... I forgot to tell you that I'm using the 1uF 35V Radial Capacitor Tantalum. is this right for this application? I'm sorry, I'm just getting started on the electronics field. I appriciatte your help. have a wonderful day.

strobe light
hi my friend.... I got a problem in my circuit. I supplied power and ground to my 4093, now the only light was on did not light. therefore, when I cut the positive lead it light up and when I switch the power on another comes on. in other words if I cycle power to pin 14 in the 4093 the lights cycle sequentially. where do I supposed to connect pin 14? do you thing I connect the potoentiometer wrong? in the potentiometer I got three pins from left to right 1,2,3. can you tell me where to connect them? I really appreciatte your help.
Swagatam Dec 11, 2010 10:05 AM
Hi Charles
I guess you are talking about the strobe light circuit?

Try adjusting the pots, the IC 4017 will not respond if it's not getting the clock inputs at its pin #14 properly.

Regards.

strobe lights
When I apllied voltage to the circuit just the led from #3 out put turns on. I double check my conections and everything looks the way you show it. what did i make wrong?

Hi Charles
N1, N2, N3, and N4 are the parts of another IC 4093. It is a 14-pin IC and these are the gates situated inside this IC. Please refer the datasheet of IC 4093.

I have already discussed the pin-outs of 4017 in the present article comprehensively..please read it carefully.

Regards.

What are the pins of n1,n2,n3,n4 in the IC4017? you show a schematic for develope a strobe light but the sample 4017 showing n1,n2,n3,n4 only has 14 pins. I need to know what are the pins in the ic 4017 with 16 pins in order to connect all components. I appreciatte your help.

Hello Anvita
If your circuit is complicated, you better assemble it over a properly designed PCB through a professional PCB designer.

You cannot connect the outputs randomly. The outputs of IC 4017 have a specific sequencing or running pattern in the order: 3-2-4-7-10-1-5-6-9-11 pin-outs.

circuit implimentation
hi,
i m doing a project on running message display. and using IC CD4017BE. can you tell me how should i implement it on PCB.? coz my circuit is too large. i m confused regarding connections. and will there be any problem if i connect randomly the outputs of this IC? or should i follow the diagram???

4017 as bistable
can u plz xplain how 4017 acts as aBistable multivibrator asap...
Swagatam Jul 29, 2010 11:56 AM
Hi Shyam
Its very simple.

When we activate the sensor momentarily using remote control, it activates the transistor. The transistor conducts and connects the positive to pin 14 of the IC. The IC takes it as a clock and its output shifts from its first pin #3 to pin #2. The next pulse makes its output to shift from pin #2 to pin #4, but pin #4 is connected to reset pin #15, so it bounces back to pin #3 and the cycle repeats. The alternate shift of the output from pin # 3 to pin #2 alternately toggles the output.
