You've decided that you want a new GPS, but aren't sure which manufacturer to go with? Garmin and Tomtom are two of the most well known GPS companies, and many people want to know which is ultimately the better brand.

Introduction

Garmin and Tomtom are probably two of the first names that come to mind when you think of GPS. Both are well established and have solid product lines with a variety of different classes of GPS units, from handheld software to vehicle navigation devices. It's hard, if not impossible to compare the two brands directly, without getting into individual GPS unit comparisons, but there are some general points where one company holds a slight edge over the other.

Features

If you plan on getting a dedicated GPS for walking or hiking, Garmin is the way to go, simply because Tomtom doesn't offer stand-alone units in this class. They do however offer GPS software for smartphones, but, of course, that requires you already have a smartphone available.

In terms of navigation GPS units, Garmin and Tomtom have a similar feature set, with various models including a selection of pre-installed maps and POIs, supporting bluetooth or wireless updates, and even extras like mp3 players and picture viewers. It really depends on the specific models being compared to determine whether the Garmin or Tomtom unit is better. Some people prefer the POI system used in most Garmin devices, claiming that it is more user-friendly than the Tomtom system.

Map Coverage

In general, both Tomtom and Garmin offer great coverage, and their maps will cover most, if not all popular areas. However, both companies use different map providers, resulting in some slight differences. Tomtom purchased Tele Atlas back in 2007, and now exclusively use Tele Atlas maps, while Garmin uses the Nokia-owned Navteq as their map provider. Many claim that Navteq has slightly better coverage in the US, whereas Tele Atlas has better European coverage, but you should check to make sure your location is covered well by either provider.

One problem common to both map providers is that sometimes one-way streets are improperly marked, and as a result the navigation GPS unit may try to lead you down the wrong way. Tomtom's Mapshare feature allows users to report and share map errors and updates with each other, which can be useful in instances such as this.

Conclusion

In the end, neither brand has a clear cut advantage over the other. In certain cases, a Tomtom GPS will be better than a Garmin, and in other situations, the opposite may hold true. The best thing to do is to compare the individual units within your price range, based on features important to you, and use reviews of each unit to make your final decision.

TomTom Is Better!
Continuing: Garmin is a little easier to use at first, but with a little use, TomTom is easy to use! Garmin's POI'S are more accurate!

I forgot to mention: Updating the software on a TomTom takes minutes! On a Garmin, it is confusing and takes forever! Through the computer you can download different celebrity voices and different regular voices for the navigation, as well as updates for safety cameras,GPS Quickfix and many more items; it is very simple!

Garmin is harder to download map updates and doesn't have all the different things to add and update to the GPS unit!

All in all. TomTom is better, faster, and louder ( I forgot to mention that TomTom has always been a louder robust unit ( audio )!

Hands down: TOMTOM WINS!

TomTom Is Better!
Continuing: The TomTom always took better routes and faster too! The Garmin still has many streets that have had a name change, the wrong name, even after a change 3 years ago! There are a lot of addresses that you can't enter; that Garmin doesn't recognize!

The traffic is much better in terms of information and it speaks traffic info. where Garmin does not! You can also change info. on the maps yourself ( a great Map Correction feature ). TomTom also has MapShare, a feature where you can share your findings wrong on the maps with millions of TomTom users!

The Lane assist feature is much better than Garmin with flashing colored arrows, etc. Also, the Garmin's Junction View feature is WORTHLESS! It came up once ( one sign )in my week of testing! TomTom's junction view was fabulous; 90% of the exits were displayed. Garmin's signs look realistic while TomTom's look like a cartoon. This makes no difference as Garmin's never show up. TomTom's signs are still attractive! TomTom has many, many pages of cstumizations, ranging from POI'S displayed on the map to avoiding gravel roads, toll booths, etc. It has many safety features you can check and uncheck! You have day and night colors, etc., etc.!!! The IQ route feature is nice! The unit will take you on different routes on different times of the day according to historical information. The fastest route is always obtained! Garmin has recently come out with this, but not as complete!

On the plus side of Garmin: The screen is brighter and doesn't wash out in the sun like a TomTom ( however, when you register a new TomTom, Via Series, etc., you get a $10.00 TomTom credit which you can use to buy anti-glare screen protectors for your GPS! On a Garmin final destination it speaks, telling you which side of the road it is on; TomTom does not However, The new TomTom's do announce this now!The mounting system is better and quicker on a Garmin. The cable is much easier to install into the unit, while TomTom is harder!

TomTom Is Superior!
I will tell you readers why TomTom is better! I have done many tests using a TomTom and a Garmin. I fist used a TomTom XL330S and a garmin 1300. The TomTom easily won!

My latest tests are with a Garmin 1490T and a TomTom XXL540TM.

The TomTom aquired satellites quicker. Initial startup is much quicker. The keyboard is much better as it never gets hard to enter an item ( Garmins have always got stiff very often and the keyboard would need to be calibrated ( Garmin has this feature ). What I mean by hard to enter is the fact that you have to touch a letter or number with all your might to enter in on top!

GARMIN WINS
My Garminn was stolen and I thought I would give TomTom a try. One of the main reasons I loved my Garmin was that it gave me sub-selections. For example, when searching for a Restaurant or Shopping it would ask what type. The TomTom gives me the whole list, which can be overwhelming. Also, some of the screens are light blue with white lettering - very hard to read.

This is like comparing Nike(Garmin) and Reebok(Tom Tom).... both offer good things but one is superior quality and a better option for the most.

Garmin v Tomtom
I had both garmin and tomtom at separate times I used it only to get from A to B. I was not interested in all the extra fearures each had to offer me, simply put Garmin win hands down for ease of use.

Garmin VS TomTom
There is another important item to consider & that is the cost of map upgrades.

Apples vs Oranges
Motorola Droid offers GPS Nav from Google for FREE?!!! Maybe the app itself is free, but the app is no good without the other NECESSARY equipment and services. How about the cost of the phone itself, which is $199, then add on the phone plan and then tack on the monthly data plan to use the cool features that the Droid has to offer. I'm not discounting the fact that the Droid is one cool piece of technology. I just disagree with your statement that it's FREE when comparing it to Garmin or Tom Tom! At least with a Garmin or Tom Tom GPS unit you have one time upfront cost of the unit and future map upgrades but that is a hell of a lot cheaper than the alternative Droid you speak so highly. In my opinion you are comparing apples and oranges.

Moot Point
The Motorola Droid offers GPS Nav from Google for FREE! That trumps Garmin AND Tom-Tom... Why are they charging so much money again? When Google Navigator is FREE?? Hmmmm......
