Where Can I Download U.S. Garmin Voices for Free?

Article by Tricia Goss (10,822 pts ) , published Nov 8, 2009

Your Garmin makes life just a little easier. You love its ease of use and trustworthy navigation. And the voice that helps you with directions - well, actually, you find it a little boring. Spice up your GPS usage with a free voice download in U.S. English.

Looking for free voices to download for your Garmin? While there are numerous GPS download sites, many of them use language that can be confusing if you are trying to get around in the United States. Fortunately, there are a few sites offering U.S. voice downloads for your Garmin GPS device.

Pigtones

Pigtones.com offers a free software program you can download called TomTom and Garmin GPS Voice. This is a free voice program as well as a POI (point of interest) installer that allows you to personalize your Garmin GPS unit. There are several U.S. Garmin GPS voices, including a comical "Bubba" voice, a "Sexy Chick" Garmin voice and a voice for your Garmin called "Arnie the Governator," presumably an impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Free Garmin Voices from Pigtones

In order to use the voice download, click the Free Download button on the TomTom and Garmin GPS Voice download page. When the File Download dialog opens, click Save and then save the file to your Desktop. Next, you need to install the Garmin Gtones Installer, also to the desktop. Once you have downloaded both, open the Installer and let it run. When finished, open the free Garmin voices you downloaded and they will be added to the Gtones library. Connect your Garmin GPS device to the computer and install the voices from the Gtunes library folder.

This download is a "free sample," which Pigtones provides in the hopes that you will enjoy the voices and purchase more from their extensive GPS voice download collection.

Garmin

Another place to download U.S. Garmin voices free for your Garmin GPS is on the Garmin website itself. Garmin provides free fun and seasonal voices you can download and enjoy. First, you must make sure that your Garmin has the most current updates installed. You can check for updates on the Garmin Web Updater site. Once your Garmin is updated, head to the Garmin Garage and click on All Voices. (While you are on the Garmin Garage site, you might also want to look at All Vehicles and All Bundles for more fun, free ways to customize your Garmin.)

Garmin Free Voice Downloads

Click the voice you want to download to your Garmin. You can then click the Play button for a preview of the voice. If you have your Garmin connected to the computer, you can bypass downloading the voice to the desktop and simply click the Install Voice button. If you want to download it to the computer and install it on the Garmin unit later, click the Download Bundle button. Save the file to your desktop and install the free voice software to your Garmin whenever you want!

Really free Garmin voices
I have only found two so far but they work great. They are Stewie from Family Guy and Cartman from South Park. Go to this site (http://www.filestube.com/search.html?q=garmin+voice&select=All) and download the .rar file FREE. You will need WinRAR (http://download.cnet.com/WinRAR-32-bit/3000-2250_4-10007677.html?part=dl-113677&subj=dl&tag=button) which is a FREE program that will unzip the .rar file to a .vpm file which is the Garmin voice file, it has to be named one of the default Garmin voice names which it is already so just copy and paste it to the folder on your Garmin. It worked on my Nuvi 350.

Garmin Voices
I tried these guys myself and a bit expensive to be honest, I too wanted a Bond voice for my nuvi and found one last week from a UK company called Celebrity Voices. I paid about $8 and the impressions are really cool.

Apparently garmin has a totally nazi like development policy, so almost nobody wants to develop voices - its a pity for them, it would make the product more popular if there were more voices.

Pigtones. Poor effort.
I checked out Pigtones.com on the promise of some funny Family Guy and Bond voices for Garmin XT Mobile.
I was disappointed.
I assumed that they would be impersonations of the real life, but they are just so poorly done. Who would honestly pay $13.00 for a poor imitation that you could have done just as poorly yourself, for free?

So much for "free"
The free voices download that the author mentions is a voice-managing software for the GPS and gives you only one free voice, which I couldn't get it to work last time I tried. If you want to get different voices, it sends you to the Pigtones website, where you have to pay around $13.00 per voice. A ridiculous price in my opinion... they even charge for a "Silence is Golden" voice, where all the directions are muted... but you still hear the clicks and can use bluetooth.

As far as the free voices from the Garmin website... there's only 3 available... and they're really... I mean... REALLY boring. Including one from one of the developers... *sigh* seriously Garmin... seriously? I don't wanna hear one of your bright developers blabbing at me with your directions to the black hole.

If anyone can link to some additional information on free voices for Garmin... I'll hug you till my arms fall off. For free.
