  • Confused [8-)] Using an IEP for a student with Language Delays or an ESL student in Preschool Environment

Title: Developing an IEP Plan for non verbal or ESL students

Topic area: working with non-verbal student, developing and IEP plan

I am creating an example of including a student in the classroom who is non-verbal.

First of all we Review Existing Data on the child and form Benchmarks or Objectives for this child and set up evaluation date to review progress being made.

    1. During Language a teacher or Speech Pathologist could work with the student on building a vocabulary and using sign at the same time. Use a picture, point and verbally say the word, then sign and say.

    2. This same process can be done for Math time. Use number cards, see it, say it, count it, and sign it.

    3. During snack everyone works together and uses sign for eat, drink, please, and thank you; this way the children are interacting and communicating with each other. Hopefully this will encourage the beginning of verbal communication between all the students and help them in forming friendships.
