Defining the Goals for Special Education Teachers

Special education teachers face some unique set of challenges as they deal with unique individuals. The teaching goals are a little bit different from the regular academic requirements. Let us explore what should be the goals of a special education teacher!

The Challenge!

Compared to the regular classroom teaching, special education teachers are faced with a different kind of challenge as these educators need to adapt to specific and special needs of their students. Children who have some disability in terms of some physical challenge or limited reasoning powers and conceptual ability, need special aids and demand specific teaching skills for effective understanding. Because of this, special education teachers need to be emotionally and mentally prepared to provide a sufficient amount of support to the child.

The goals of special education teachers, therefore, are based on the fact that in order to impart knowledge to children that are in a special education program, he/she should be passionate about the work and have a genuine regard and affection for the students.

Requirements of an Efficient Teacher for Special Education!

Children with special needs include those that have physical disabilities, like hearing, speech or vision impaired and those with mental challenges like autism, ADHD or dyslexia. To work effectively with such children, there are certain personality traits and career skills that are required in the special education teachers.

  • Special education teachers need specific and intensive training that are acquired through a bachelor’s degree in special education, at the very least. There are specific teaching programs and licensure exams for certain states that need to be completed. Through these, goals of special education teachers can be made clearer to those who want to dive into such a career.

  • The special education teacher should also be skilled on curriculum planning, writing and implementing of Individual Educational Programs (IEP), behavioral plans.

  • Since the task of a special education teacher is very demanding, they also need to have excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Apart from passion and patience, a good teacher needs to include a focused yet caring approach when dealing with emotionally challenged children and should have the ability to offer positive reinforcement to inspire the special needs of the students.

The teacher should also have good communication skills to remain open to parents and other teachers to achieve the goals of special education teachers.

Defining the Goals

Armed with the skills discussed above, a good teacher for special education, should be clear in his/her goals:

  • The most important goal is to develop a strong bond with the students.
  • They should be able to provide the much needed support and confidence to each and every child according to their needs.
  • The goals of special education teachers should also include providing an individualized instructional program that will maximize the learning opportunities of their student, despite their disability.

  • Apart from meeting the academic needs, special education teachers should aim at developing the social and vocational skills of special children.

  • Special education teachers need to understand that they should be able to offer a good quality and highly customized, goal-directed instructions to the students as well as their parents.

Special children and their parents need to be assured that suitable education program, teaching methods and techniques, materials, equipment and qualified teaching team are available to meet their distinctive requirements. The development of such confidence and faith is also a part of a special education teacher’s goal.

Special education is a very challenging arena which entails a lot of hard work and understanding. Teachers who have the passion and capability to offer support and guidance needed by the students will not just feel a sense of accomplishment, but likewise, appreciate the crucial part they play in the life of a child.
