Children with ADHD are faced with criticism and failure on a regular basis. Dealing with this can cause a tremendous drop in their self-esteem. Building the self-esteem of a child with ADHD can be simplified by following a few of these simple suggestions in this article.

ADHD: Helping Build Self-Esteem

Children with ADHD are faced with criticism and failure on a regular basis. Dealing with this can cause a tremendous drop in their self-esteem. Building up their self-esteem will take some effort on the part of the parents and teachers. They should work together to implement an everyday plan for praising and rewarding the small successes and good behaviors of the child with ADHD.

Praise

All children like to be told that they have done a good job. For children with ADHD, take the time to praise them for even the smallest successes. This will motivate them to work harder, so that they will receive more praise. Just by telling them what a good job they have done, you will be helping to build their self-esteem.

Rewards

Offering rewards is a great way to help build self-esteem. You should discuss with your child what behaviors will receive an award. Offering stickers or other things that you know your child enjoys, will encourage them to complete the rewarding activities. Keep a chart so that they can see their accomplishments. Being able to see a visual of their achievements, will give them a nice boost in the self-worth department.

Work closely with your child's teacher to implement the reward system at school. You may need to supply the stickers or other rewards, but it will be well worth it. This will encourage your child to work hard both in school and at home.

Communication

Criticism from their peers can be damaging to their self-esteem. Let your child know that you are always willing to listen. You can't solve all of their problems, but you can listen and give them advice on how to deal with, and react to these things.

As simple as this may seem, the impact it can make on your child will amaze you. By loving and encouraging children with ADHD, we teach them how to love themselves.
