Teaching Strategies for Gifted Children

Teaching gifted children is a challenge for teachers. It is important to structure a learning environment for gifted children. Teachers can nurture the special abilities of gifted children by adopting suitable teaching strategies.

Teaching strategies

A large number of strategies are available for teachers which they can employ for teaching gifted children. These teaching strategies can stimulate the process of learning for gifted children without overburdening the student or the staff.

  1. A teacher should design a child-friendly environment in the class that includes variety of activities so that gifted children can engage in different activities according to their interest and choices. Teachers can arrange self-initiated activities for gifted children. Free moving space should be available. Teachers should develop different corners for different activities such as for extra books, art, music, mime etc.
  2. Another strategy which teachers can use for gifted children is to make small groups of gifted children with similar interest and activities. Gifted children work better when they are grouped together in the areas of their interest. Grouping of like minded children with same abilities provides a productive environment for learning. In group teaching, gifted children can share their ideas with each other, and help each other.
  3. Teachers should use self-directed learning for gifted children (i.e. give independence to the children to choose the topic of their interest. This will help gifted children to become independent and to make decisions.
  4. Teachers should engage gifted children in outdoor activities other than from their course books. Teachers should take help of gifted children to plan for these activities which will challenge their abilities. It will help to nurture the mind of gifted children to think and create news ideas. Gifted children should be asked to use advance materials to search for topics of interest.
  5. Teachers can organize enrichment activities for gifted children. Enrichment activities can include field trips, a trip to a science exhibition etc.
  6. Teachers can organize seminars for gifted children on the topics that are not covered in the class. It can help gifted children to learn about the topics that are outside the standard curriculum.
