Children with greater intelligence and creativity may fall under the category of gifted children. Enrichment is a way to broaden the scope and vision of gifted children. Enrichment refers to the activities that fall outside the regular curriculum.

Enrichment Activities at Home

Parents can play an important role in enhancing the abilities of their gifted child. At home parents can start with basics with fun added to the learning. Parents can arrange family field trips to teach about science and nature around their neighborhoods.

For gifted toddlers, parents can arrange their toys in the bottom drawers of the room. Children learn more by real life things than toys (e.g. Put some forks and spoons in a tray and let the gifted child sort out the two). This will help to increase the mental ability of the child.

For a grown up gifted child, parents can read a story and after finishing ask the child about the relevant title of the story and ask questions from the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Parents can show different pictures of persons in different uniforms and ask the gifted child about various jobs they might be involved in.

Simple words can be introduced to the gifted child at home by labeling common objects in the house and especially in the child’s room.

Math activities can be incorporated by daily routine experiences. Game like activities such as buying and selling with your child can help to enhance the math’s abilities in the child.

Enrichment Activities at School

Gifted children must be nurtured carefully academically in the regular classrooms. In a regular classroom, gifted children must be given an opportunity to interact with other gifted children by organizing special seminars, debates and discussions.

Gifted children must be encouraged to participate in enrichment activities at school independently. Gifted children should be encouraged to join the chess club, debate team etc.

Gifted children must be provided with independent projects or some special assignments to work on. Special classes can be organized in the school for gifted children in their courses of interest.

Advanced facilities should be provided to the gifted children in laboratories, workshops and other fields.

Specialized mentors who can guide gifted children in their path of learning can prove to be a boon to enhance their abilities and skills.
