Exploring Resource Rooms for Special Educational Needs

The resource room can be a great place for special education children to learn and have their needs met.

Definition of a Resource Room

A meeting area or classroom that can be a lesser formation of children present is a resource room. These classrooms are designed for students who need more of a special type of tutoring and are usually in a different assembly setting for a more one on one atmosphere. The student’s particular educational need based on their IEP evaluation is carried out in these types of classrooms called resource rooms. It’s where an educator and student can focus more on their needs in learning. This educational support is designed to make sure the inclusion model is in position.

The Length of Time a Student is in a Resource Room

The length of time a student spends in a resource room will depend on the schools policy and the child’s needs. For example, several hours throughout the day in time spans of 45 minutes may be an ideal time-frame for one student and may not work for others. It can vary from the school jurisdiction and from the age and needs of the child. Resource rooms are in every grade level of education from elementary to high school and designed for consistency in specific areas of needs for the individual student.

It’s not About Stereotyping Your Child

Parents and students may feel uncomfortable or labeled by going to a resource room, but that’s not what it’s about. It is about delivering the right teaching tools and ability to give and get an education that will accommodate some of the more challenging areas of learning for your child. The groups in a resource classroom are typically smaller which will mean less distraction, more one on one time. By going to a classroom that has students that share the same need can build confidence in the student by just knowing that they are not the only ones who may need help.

Teachers in the Resource Room

The teachers in a resource room class room are there to meet the students’ unique needs. They will plan out and tutor in a child’s individual learning specification. These educators work hand and hand with both the student’s regular classrooms and the parents. They follow with the IEP formation and contribute to IEP meetings and reviews. Giving support to the students needs, teachers provide a surrounding that will help the student’s to progress at the pace each student can achieve.

Students that go to a resource room are tested and appraised focusing on the needs they require to better achieve an enhanced education. These evaluations are normally redone every 3 years to establish their eligibility in specialized education. Resource rooms are designed to be a great benefit to enhance your child’s education. If your child is going into a resource class room setting, it should be a great experience for you and your child supporting and centering on your student's needs.
