Creativity is something which arises from one’s inner self. It is not acquired and it does not depend on the physique of a child. Even a disabled child can be creative because creativity develops from mind and not from body.

Helping Disabled Students Develop Creativity

It is the duty of parents and teachers to identify the creativity among special children. Disabled children have the capability of doing many creative things such as if a child cannot walk, he can write very good poems and stories. Some children can sing, dance and can do many such activities. These children may be disabled only in one aspect but they can work in other fields. To encourage such children teachers and parents should provide them support and confidence. They should enhance their creativity by providing a good learning environment and adequate materials.

In the class and at home teachers and parents should not try to suppress their activities. If they observe something special in a disabled child, they should try to encourage him/her. In the school, curriculum can be designed by the teacher according to the interest and needs of the children. If a teacher notices some creative work in a child, he/she can arrange special equipments and extra time to guide the student. Special and latest techniques can be used by the teachers to promote creativity among disabled children. A teacher should appreciate the ideas and suggestions given by such children in the classroom. Teachers should avoid making any negative comment on any suggestion given by children in the class.

They will feel confident and happy if a teacher recognizes the creativity of these special children in the class in front of their peers. Thus, these special children can be made to feel special by recognizing their creativity. By helping them in their school activities they can be made to feel that they are cared for and have access to an equitable education. In providing students with effective learning opportunities, teachers can help them to develop a sense of confidence and satisfaction in their learning and in their future role in society. Teachers and parents should make every effort to help children with special needs in developing their skills and creativity and to make them useful members of the society.
