The article briefly discusses the advantages of resorting to Vedic Mathematics as a tool to better numerical ability. It also discusses various tools available for learning.Once a child has learnt the basic calculations, he can be introduced to the principles of Vedic Mathematics in a phased manner.

Making Learning Mathematics Easy

Do not worry about your problems with mathematics; I assure you mine are far greater.

- Albert Einstein

Well, the above quote holds true for a good number of us. Having come across the principles just a few months back made me think “Why was I not introduced to them, when I needed them?” I’m sure my mathematics teacher would have adored me.

Its place of origin is in India. "Vedic Mathematics" originates from the “Atharva Veda”. "Atharva Veda" deals with the branches like Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine, and all other sciences. In turn Vedic Mathematics is applicable in all - Daily Life, Business Negotiations, Bio Chemistry, Computer Science, Chip Development, and Commerce Studies etc.

Who can learn Vedic Mathematics: Children can start learning Vedic Mathematics from the age of 7 years. Once they understand the basic mathematical calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, they are ready to learn Vedic Mathematics.

Advantages of Vedic Mathematics for Students:

  • Frees the students from finger counting: When a child starts working with numbers, the first tools that he resorts to are drawing lines and counting on fingers. Counting on fingers develops as an irreversible habit. This slows down the mental ability of the young student. It slows down the speed of doing calculations, which further affects a student’s performance and confidence level.
  • Helps minimize silly mistakes: A slow mind is prone to wavering concentration. A wavering concentration is the prime reason for making silly mistakes while making calculations.
  • Helps make better approximation and intelligent guessing: A student through his entire education is required to appear through a variety of entrance, professional examinations. Vedic Mathematics helps a student appear and fare well in such examinations. Vedic Mathematics serves as a tool where quick calculations can be made and answers verified without much wastage of time.
  • Helps in day to day life: Very few of us are able to make quick calculations while doing purchasing. Very few of us ask for two liters of fuel at a refill station for the fear of calculating the exact amount.
  • Helps during various entrance exams: Knowledge of vedic mathematics can help students to perform better in exams like GMAT, GRE etc.

How can Vedic Mathematics be learnt:

It is based on sixteen formulas (sutras) made up to barely 120 words in all. The best thing being that one needs only basic mathematical knowledge to become conversant with the methods.

Vedic Mathematics can be learnt with the help of:

  • Relevant books which are easily available in the market;
  • Online courses;
  • Classroom courses (for all levels – schools, colleges, university).

Vedic Mathematics is a set of powerful techniques, yet so simple that it makes mathematics fun to work. Its word-formula based and helps to make calculations very fast. It encourages mental calculations and breaks bigger calculations into smaller ones. Memorizing of tables and squares is not required. It is exceedingly flexible and offers a large number of alternatives for almost every kind of problem.

Vedic Mathematics converts the dry and tedious mathematics into a playful and a joyful subject, which everyone learns with smiles. Vedic mathematics is the gift of the Vedas to solve the problem of MATHS ANXIETY being faced in mathematics education in the world.
