  • Are there any online law schools?

I have always been interested in pursueing my law degree but am not in the position to pay a ton of money or do it full time.  Are there any online options for law school.  I am good at independent study and would love the option to be able to do that, take whatever tests, writer whatever papers I need, etc. and then be able to take the bar.  My knowledge of the process is limitted, but I was just curious if such a thought was crazy or not.

While there are online law degree programs there is one challenge to this...none of the law programs online are accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). In the United States only one state does not require the law degree to be ABA accredited. This state is California. So if you would like to practice law and live in California, yes you can attain an online law degree. Some schools offering this degree online are:

    • California School of Law
    • Abraham Lincoln University School of Law
    • University of Honolulu
    • Concord School of Law
    • William Howard Taft University

    Josh,

Your thought process is by no means crazy! Thanks to the technology age, almost everything is online. I wasn't too sure myself what was out there. I did some basic research and this is what I found:

Taft Law School: http://www.taftu.edu/ If you look at their Tuition tab you'll see that it costs a little more than 7,000 dollars a year. That's definitely not a bad price! They are also accredited, which is important. Taft Law School is also a member of three different associations/groups. You can find it under their accreditation tab.

Concord Law School: http://www.concordlawschool.edu/ Concord Law School started it's online program in 1998. It recently also became part of Kaplan University. They boast that many of their students are graduates of the Ivy Leagues schools such as Harvard, Yale, and MIT. It runs about $9,250 per year plus fees.

There are more out there, but before I do more research I am curious as to what part of law you are interested in. Walden and Phoenix University pop up in search engines when you put in the generic term "law degree," but upon further inspection I can't seem anything except Criminal Justice degrees. With more information I might be able to find what you are looking for.

Thank you to everyone for the great information.  Given my background I would likely gravitate toward Business or IP Law.  I have actually been researching seperately how to study and pass the Patent Bar exam which would allow me to become a registered patent agent.  I don't think I would ever want to go and ben an actual courtroom attorney.  I am more interested in the knowledge than anything.
