Degrees in Distance Learning

It seems as if every school, college, and university offers classes online these days. Online education is possible through distance learning. As taking classes online grows in popularity it seems like a wise career move, and to get a degree in distance learning can help lead to an online teaching position. For such a career, why not consider one of the four schools below that offer teaching degree programs that have an emphasis on distance learning…

  • Capella University offers both a master’s and a doctorate degree in instructional design for online learning. The doctoral program focuses on the design and leadership aspects of online learning. The masters program focuses on designing effective instruction, methods of online delivery, software tools, and project management. Both of these programs are designed for those who are already licensed teachers. If you would like to earn your teaching degree you can do that as well, but it is a separate program. Both programs are done entirely online. The cost per credit is $410 for the master’s program and the coursework costs $4,485 a quarter for the PhD. Students can also complete the application for enrollment online as well. If this program sounds interesting, check out the School’s Web site.

  • California State University East Bay offers a certificate program in online teaching and learning. The classes are all taken online and require about ten to twelve hours of work a week. The objectives of this program are to enable you to create and run your own online course. There are four courses to take which each cost $1098. Check the Schools’ Web site for details.

  • University of Florida also offers a certificate program in online teaching and learning. There are only three courses: creating and delivering online content, instructional computing I, and distance learning and teaching. This program is also conducted online. You must possess a bachelor’s degree to enroll in this program. A Florida resident will pay $1349.10 per credit, while non-Florida residents pay $1452.63 per credit for online courses. The nice thing about this program is that students only have to take three courses to get the certificate.

  • Appalachian State University has also a certificate program in distance learning. The program has five courses: Introduction to Web Page Design and Development, Multimedia Image Production, Web 2.0 and Social Networking, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching and Learning. For in-state residents of North Carolina, the cost is $185.75 per credit, while out-of-state costs $729.50. For more information, inquire with the school at the site indicated below.

As students can see, there are many options if they are interested in receiving a certificate or degree in online teaching and learning. These are only a few schools listed with such programs.

The salary for teaching online classes is fairly good and it is a great alternative for teachers who would rather not teach in the classroom. The job outlook is positive with online learning continuing to be on the rise at schools for students.
