About StraighterLine and Earning Cheap College Credits

Article by Matthew G. (268 pts ) , published Nov 1, 2009

Do you want to start an online college but are worried about how to pay for it? StraighterLine may be just what you are looking for to get you started on your online learning journey.

What is StraighterLine?

StraighterLine is a way for students to earn college credit online before they even enroll in college. They offer seven college level courses online that offer three college credits a piece. StraighterLine offers these courses in two different pricing packages. One package offers you the ability to choose a course at a price of $399 each, the other package is only $99 and allows you access to StraighterLine for a month. During this month you can complete as many courses as you can, although they must be done one at a time.

You may find that paying $99 for three college level credits is quite cost effective. If you have even more free time, you can get two or maybe even three courses done in one month alone, saving you even more money. StraighterLine allows you to work at your own pace. StraighterLine does not participate in any financial aid programs so all costs will be out of pocket for the student.

Students may choose StraighterLine over their local community college or other online colleges because of the combination of cost effectivness and freedom. You are able to work at your own pace, which you will not be able to do at your local brick and mortar community college. As previously mentioned, at $99 a month it is cheaper than most online colleges. StraighterLine students also have on-demand access to online educators who can help tutor them. There is no extra charge for this service.

Courses Offered for College Credit

  • English Composition I
  • Economics I
  • Economics II
  • Accounting I
  • Accounting II
  • PreCalculus
  • College Algebra

Each of these courses is worth three college level credits. Especially business majors may find these courses useful for saving them time and money.

Partner Colleges

StraighterLine has partner colleges that offer this college credit. These colleges are Fort Hays State University, Charter Oak State College, Potomac College and Lake City Community College. These are the colleges you apply to after you have finished StraighterLine to transfer your credit to another school. You can also choose to attend one of these schools. The application fee is the cheapest at Lake City Community College with a price of only $15. Fort Hays State University has a $30 application fee. Once you have applied to a school you can request a transfer of your credits to the school of your choice.

Even with having to pay an application fee to another school, using StraighterLine will still save a student a great deal of money. Who knows, you might even decide on staying in a partner school. Some schools do have limits for how many credits you can transfer in from other institutions so always check in advance.
