Although there are few choices for an online PhD in criminology, those looking for a doctoral degree in the field of criminology should consider the University of the Rockies. Read here for information regarding residency, fees, and the program.

Introduction

The program at the University of the Rockies offers an attractive choice for those considering a doctoral degree in criminology. It should be noted that this program is not specifically for a PhD. It is instead for the pursuit of a doctor of psychology (PsyD) in criminology and a justice studies specialization degree, which should not deter those looking for a PhD in criminology. However, those interested should engage in further research if there are nuances in the comparison of the two degrees.

Residency

The program at the University of the Rockies requires that students attend in-residence weekends in Colorado Springs for three courses within the program. These courses may not be taken more than one time, which would eliminate the possibility of fulfilling the requirement with one weekend. However, with three weekends in residence at Colorado Springs, this is not a demanding requirement. This would be a minimal time commitment for those in pursuit of the degree.

Fees

At a minimum of sixty-two credits and at $840 a credit hour, this degree would likely cost around the $8,000 to $9,000 a semester for four years. These numbers are averaged to get an idea for comparison-related purposes. These numbers are exactly able to be compared as University of the Rockies offers this program one class at a time (one six-week course). However, it would appear that the price of this program is a little high compared to other alternatives.

Advantages

The one class at a time feature is particularly promising. Also, students get the benefit of the institution's reputation, which is an additional plus. This and other options, such as Indiana University of Pennsylvania, may look slightly better than schools which are based completely online. The University of the Rockies seems to have an attractive online studying scheme with minimal requirements which are benefits for prospective students.

The program at the University of the Rockies for a PsyD in criminology and justice studies specialties degree is an attractive option for those looking for an online-based doctoral-level degree. The institution and setup of the program are attractive benefits for potential students, while the cost of the program is on the expensive side.
