Most students are looking for scholarships for college, but did you know that there are scholarships for online students too? Eligible students can apply for scholarships to assist them in earning their degree from an online university.

Types of Scholarships

Scholarships for online students are available for the qualifying "re-entry" student, such as a displaced homemaker or dislocated worker, or the senior adult seeking an online college degree. The list of scholarships mentioned are only a few of what's out there. Your resident state, in addition to the university's possible assistance, may offer grants and scholarships to eligible students.

Where Learning Begins Scholarships: These scholarships for online students are awards of $1500 to applicants seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree online. A required essay of 1500 words or less must be submitted telling why this degree is vital for you to continue your education. A description of any personal challenges or difficulties you have faced and overcame in order to get this far in your education should be discussed.

Single Parent Scholarships: These are available from the state you are a resident of. It is focused on assisting students who earn a low income, have children younger than age 18 and have not yet earned a degree from a four year college or university.

Law Enforcement Officers' Dependents Scholarships: These are available scholarships for online students that are offered to eligible dependents of law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMTs who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty and are available in the majority of the states in the U.S. The states of New Jersey and New York award the World Trade Center Scholarship to eligible dependents.

Early Childhood Development Scholarships: These scholarships for college are awarded to qualified applicants in the states of Kentucky, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Special available scholarships for online students are The Senior Adult Scholarship Program and LEAP (Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership) Scholarship. The Golden Leaf Scholarship is North Carolina's offer of over 500 scholarships of $3,000 each to assist eligible rural students who enroll in a four year public university, including online degree programs.

The states of Delaware, Alabama, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Virginia, Vermont and West Virginia award Education Scholarships to eligible students. Each state has specific requirements. The state of Massachusetts awards scholarships for paraprofessionals.

Nursing Scholarships are offered by numerous states to students with each requiring eligibility. Scholarships for Technology students are offered by North Carolina, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

Numerous branches of the armed forces award Military Scholarships to military personnel and their family members. Each state also awards scholarships and assistance to members of the National Guard and Reserves.

If you are a student seeking a degree from an accredited online university or college, you may apply for scholarships from your resident state to assist with the cost of your online education.

grant or scholarship
I lost my 26yr job about 7yrs ago, am handicapped, had polio. At that time I was having a lot of physical pain issues & such, lived off my retirment money & now am on Soc Sec Disability. Our office closed down to downsizing. Anyway I find a school for on-line training which is registered with its state for vocational schools, but is not accredited. Cost is about $3800 for 1yr for medical transcription. i NEED something I will not have to pay back. There is so much info to try to sift thru on the internet, it is tiring. I have an email in to a head person for WIA which I really know nothinng about. Was wondering what other options. It looks like Voc Rehab, which i recently visited, only tries to help you find work with something you already have a skill for, not new schooling. Any info would be helpful.

scholarship
I have returned to school and am currently enrolled in an online course. I am NOT, a single mother, disabled, a veteran, a senior citizen, a minority, or looking for another school. I AM looking for scholarships, not links to other schools. Does such a thing exist for a middle aged, healthy, white male?

Hi
Hi,
I would try this website listed above in Willa's article. I would also consider researching for adult education scholarships.
Best on your endeavors, and let us know how it goes!
