Many people are interested in online college degrees. Finding the best online college can be challenging. It all depends on the degree you seek, your finances and how to determine if an online school is reputable. Before choosing an online school, keep these tips in mind.

Before Your Start

Online and distance learning has become very popular among working individuals and stay at home moms. The ability to progress at your own rate and not have to travel is extremely appealing. However, not all online schools are the same. Some will offer a degree that is accepted almost everywhere, others are just degree factories. Here are some tips that will help you in your search for finding the best online college for you.

Before beginning a search for schools, check with your employer to see what degree program is in line with your occupation. This may be a way to help with financing. You can read the article How to Finance an Online Degree with a Tuition Assistance Program for more detailed information on financing your online college experience.

Set Goals for Your Online College Degree Expectations

Decide on what it is you are looking to accomplish. It does not matter if your goal is to obtain a bachelors degree or a Ph. D. Either way, without a clear course of action, time and money will be wasted.

Once goals have been set, the next step is to look at finances. How will you pay for your online degree? Do you have money set aside for this? If financing is required, schools that offer tuition payment plans might take priority over those that do not.

Buyer Beware

The internet is full of online schools and colleges. When choosing the best online college that will suit your needs, be sure to check references. This includes former students as well as contacting your state attorney general’s office to see if any complaints have been filed against them. Look into the college’s accreditation. Does the degree you seek require you to attend an accredited school? For example many local school districts have particular rules regarding the acceptance of online teaching degrees. Certain degrees may not be obtained from an accredited school. In the US, for example, there are no accredited schools offering degrees in Holistic medicine and Homeopathy.

The speed at which you progress through your degree online will also help to determine if the school is legitimate. No reputable school will issue a master’s degree in 6 weeks. Even if you have an amazing number of transferable credits, most reputable schools will require a minimum of 25 credit hours before handing out a degree.

Know Your Online College Terminology

Know the difference between a degree program, a diploma program and a certificate program. A degree program should offer a 2 year, 4 year, or advanced degree such as a masters or doctorate. The minimal time to complete a 2 year degree is 16-18 months. There are accelerated 4 year degree programs as well. These can be completed usually in 3 years. The time to complete masters and doctorate degrees varies on the credits you already have and the type of degree you are looking to obtain. Diploma programs on the other hand usually are completed in a year or less. Certificate programs can be as short as 2 - 6 months or as long as a year and a half. Although diploma and certificate programs can be completed faster than degrees, many employers do not accept them. It depends on the program. For example a certificate in graphic arts will not hold as much weight as a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree.

When choosing the best online college suitable for you, educate yourself about all of their policies. This includes cancellation fees, extension requests, does tuition include books, errors in shipping and how assignments are sent to the school for review. Sometimes life gets in the way and you may have to put your online college degree on hold. Know what you are getting into before signing on the dotted line.

Once you have decided that an online degree will fit into your lifestyle and you have researched your school of choice, it is time to enroll. Good luck on your new adventure in online learning.
